I was laid off 2 mos before my 10 year anniversary and 9 mos after moving across the country for a position I was internally recruited for and 2mos after I received a glowing mid year review. I was sent a meeting request for the end of my shift with the general manager for a "catch up"
I walked in, was told " you've done an outstanding job but we're going to do away with your dept. We can offer you a different position/different shift/for 30k less than you make now
Me: I made 25k more than that before you recruited me from my previous position to move here.
Mind you the location operates on the buddy system. Only friends and friends is friends get hired in management. I was there to do a job and I did it very well. My dept was in shambles when I started. I implemented numerous things to make everything flow better, run safer, and to help build associate morale. I was professional and friendly but no buddy. I watched the GM hire childhood friend with no experience for a similar position to mine (overlooking several extremely qualified people), another one of the "buddies" brother with no experience over highly qualified individuals, and right after I was let go. Given the equivalent of 3mos salary (after taxes). Health insurance stopped 2 days later.
One of My biggest issues was that I was under a 2 year contract due to relocation assistance. Had I received a heads up and the go ahead to break my contract I could have easily found another position elsewhere in the company as in my previous position I worked with Ferguson people all over the country.
They did me dirty and I'm utterly disgusted by a company I truly loved and worked my a$$ off at for 10yrs. Mind you in my tenure I was promoted 4 times, well known, and highly respected for getting things done.

5 mos later, I'm still unemployed but they couldn't pay me to ever take a job with Ferguson again. As I'm stuck in a state where I know no one, 650 miles away from my family, and now with no job.
To add more insult they also hired a supervisor and an additional lead to help the other shift in my dept handle the day to day because that manager wasn't strong it on his own. Took my former associates and kept the lead overseeing the shift/Dept that they actually didn't fully get rid of, and sent the rest to another Dept where they're essentially "standing around all day"
So it wasn't about budgets. A lead and a supervisor salary plus benefits likely costs the company more than I did and now they're barely getting done half of what they used to. And yes.... That supervisor hired... Also one of their "buddies".
