Why are some positions being downgraded instead of WFRd? What’s the point? Does the pay stay the same? Is it in a way saving their buddy from being WFR?

Every single person I saw downgraded in the fall was laid off in Feb. Every. single. One.
I'm glad management is being flattened.
It depends on the job and changes in tools. For instance - in 1999 - 2000 webmasters just above entry level were commanding $80K a year (about 150K in today’s dollars).
There skills were rare and updating web pages according to management and designer’s specs could be laborious.
But as tools were developed that made managing web sites easier more people could manage their own content and get more done. Web master (mistress) jobs became reclassified as lower pay and some were eliminated or people who left never replaced. The master/mistress title is seldom used anymore
As AI takes on more rote functions some jobs will be reclassified because the amount of experience needed won’t be the same. They seldom cut the pay of people in those jobs, but raises will be hard to come by until they take on another role.
