It’s time to rethink the economics of commuting, employees are effectively giving away hours of unpaid labor each week just to show up, with no added compensation or productivity gains to justify it.

Just silently make it up in your own way. Make sure to have some good quality water-cooler conversations that take you away from your job. Hey, your just doing your part "collaborating". That thing needs getting done "soon", well you'll get it end of day or end of week.

I've always viewed commuting in this way. I've always lived within 10 miles of work.

Exactly, why not just have people in India or another low cost country do the work you can do from home. You don't like that idea of remote work though, do you?

Work-life balance shouldn’t be sacrificed just to be seen in a building. If the work gets done, why should location matter more than results? I’m driving 45 minute each way while losing valuable time.

“Labor” begins when you get to the office….not while you are commuting. If you don’t like the commute, move closer or find a new job
