How is it done? Do they wait for you to return or do they contact you (or try to contact you) immediately?

They da-n sure did it to me. Manager was waiting on Monday morning at the entrance I used. He shuffled me over to the dreaded exit room and confiscated my computer and an HR guy shoved the papers under my nose. It was a complete surprise to me. and I was on the street in about 40 minutes. I found out everybody else got whacked on Tuesday and Wednesday the week before
We already know who’s next. Just saying. Dont let it disrupt you current vacation plans. Is what it is. Nothing you can do about it.
It can happen. I worked with someone who got laid off while he was on sabbatical.
If they took the package they would have a permanent vacation.

If it wasn't on the books very long I have seen them deny vacations so communication goes out to everyone at the same time.
Yes it can happen, ideally it’s courtesy of your manager to inform you and/or work with HR to push your exit date accordingly when you are back.
They can lay off a female employee in the middle of giving birth in a hospital so don’t be so surprised if you are on a vacation.
You can be laid off while on vacation. They will simply disable your access. I found out once when the RSA CODE app declined my login. They don’t have an obligation to even notify you. I’m not kidding. They called a sudden meeting ( 2 hours notice) while I was on vacation and laid off many people. Everyone lost access at the end of the call. I did not even know about that meeting since I was in another time zone and had lost access before I waking up. And I did not know for weeks because I don’t check office email while on vacation,
I know someone who was on vacation when he was impacted. No one had the heart to call him. He found out his first day back, when he couldn't get in the building. True story.

They could fire you by email, but legally speaking, they can't fire who they can't find. Become perpetually unavailable and achieve job security by strategically absenting yourself geographically. People have gotten the news while on vacation for sure has happened many times
The manager is required to present the layoff papers in person. They have to travel to wherever the employ is vacationing. A good friend of mine was laid off when he was visiting North Korea for a vacation. Hope this helps.
