CFO, Storyteller, And Boundary-Breaker At Teradata
ByJack McCullough, Senior Contributor

C* and I recently connected to talk about the importance of storytelling in finance, leading Teradata’s shift to cloud-based solutions, and how CFOs can embrace opportunities that push boundaries.

“I’ve heard a number of accountants and controllers who say, ‘I can’t present. I can’t communicate. I can’t tell a story,’” she said. “It’s not that you can’t. You need to practice. You need to say to yourself, ‘This is something I’m going to do.’ Invest like any other skill. You have to put the same investment into being a communicator. I encourage people to not put boundaries and barriers on themselves and to put the same time and effort into becoming a good communicator as they already have to become a good controller or financial analyst.”

Let’s talk reality and not the diversity hire’s spin. From Seeking Alpha:

A combination of headwinds, "including above-average on-premise erosions, slower-than-expected Cloud ARR growth, deteriorating expansion rates, elongating sales cycles, and a stronger USD have reduced topline growth expectations, accelerated questions about share loss, and rattled investor conviction, with the stock down 26% YTD and 40% over the last 12 months, and short interest near a 12-month high," Morgan Stanley analyst Erik Woodring added.

As a result, Teradata is currently trading at its lowest valuation on record since 2016, the firm finds.

Sounds like a dying company to me.

Marketing has been ordered to weigh in! Glad you’re not my financial advisor. The entire market went up, so TDC did as well. It had nothing to do with TDC. Starting in the low 20s makes it much easier to tick up. TDC is a zombie that doesn’t know when to fall down.

Yes! Great story telling. And also great strategy and execution by the ELT and BOD. Great to see all the doom sayers and doubters figure out why a “dying company” stock went up 6% in one single day. Cheers cheers cheers👏👏👏
