Ok my wonderful manager was supposed to help me with my career progression. I have not gotten any feedback or plan towards my future. The manager is more focused on the two hipos in the group. I have not been given the opportunities the others have. The two hipos got moved into high profile projects even though they were not as experienced as I am. Now I am over 50 and the hipos are in their 40's so I am not surprised. I guess I am done and so is my career. I am just tired of the lies and BS about exxon we care about our workers and our careers.

There is no career development in EM except if you are the chosen one for some unknown reason and that reason is neither merit or competency. Sad but true. It's surprising the company still survives despite this.
Management only ranks their buddies or who they like up and develops them. The rest they do not care or move you lateral. That is why Exxon is known to have a “toxic” environment. We are exxonmobil and the ranking system is not effective bc they have the wrong people in management.
If you're 50 and didn't know this by now, count your blessings, you haven't already been PIPed. You're actually lucky to have laid low and out of the crosshair. Unless you are a HiPo, no attention is good attention.
Career development does not exist if your potential is <36.
Yes, you read that correct. In the new staffing process, only potential 36+ is really closely tracked. All the rest which is probably 90% of the org, is random events of luck and fortune. Maybe a few back channel or goasip their way through, but they typically don’t earn enough respect to actually go higher.
So if you have never been told that tou are high potential, might as well look for other jobs because son, THERE IS NO ONE PLANNING FOR YOUR CAREER.
Now apply that to your boss, he knows this and most likely is frustrated himself/herself as well. and the cycle propogates.
I am 39 and my manager is so consumed with himself and his own career that I get ZERO career development. You’re not alone unfortunately.
Career forecast = NSI
Yes the writing is on the wall. I am already planning on a possible 55 exit. Everything is paid off and I can live on my wife's salary. I have a couple of jobs lined up with service companies if I want them. My trajectory nose dived this year and I am constantly falling. I hit NI and have never been ranked low before. There is always something I did not do. Even if you are not aware that you should have done it. Thanks for the info it makes sense now. I kept trying to understand the problem when it was clear all along. The truth is good because it is liberating. There is no logic for the ranking.
55 you’re career is done, layback and take the money
If you are between 50 and 55 years old, your manager will only spend very little time on your career development unless you are a HiPo. Your career has max'd out so why spend time on an activity that is going no where.
Yes, it appears to be "discrimination" based on age but how are you going to prove it. All career development verbal discussions and notes taken during the "managers" meetings are shredded after the face-to-face annual meetings are over. The only written document remaining is your EADS in CareerConnect.
Welcome to internal politics where verbal and meeting notes disappear. You cannot "discover" something in a lawsuit that does not "exist".
Same boat for me, early 50s and absolutely no feedback or direction from my supervisor on plans for my continued improvement and growth.
Keep on milking a salary.
Take the hint. They don't want you. Manager, coworkers, and company
The only ones that should matter is yourself and your family
No surprise. As you approach 55 years old, your career plateaus (unless you are a HiPo). ExxonMobil would like you to retire when you turn 55 years old.
Bottom Line - Plan your career financially as if you will retire at the age of 55.
