I know of a few employees maybe 25 or 30 years ago who were let go at 52 thru 54 years old. They sued exxon for wrongful termination and won confidential settlements. In the past 15 years since the NRE protection I only know of one who was fired for dr-gs. The employee had an accident in the lab ad was dr-g tested. They wanted to refuse the dr-g test but had no choice. They tested positive for several dr-gs. They paid for retesting and failed a second time. It still took exxon several weeks to terminated this person. They were 54 years old and got most of their retirement at 65 years. I have seen employees piped and fired at 45 to 50 years old.
One person was piped at 51 and had to pass the pip in order to continue. They were able to pass and are RE now. I knew a worker who was NRE and planned on leaving at 55. He had inherited a lot of money from his mother and did not need to work anymore. He pushed the limits of work from home, flexible work, and sick leave. Surprisingly he was never PCP PIPed untill after NRE at age 59. He just took it easy and did the bare or less than minimum. I think they were scared of firing him and wanted him to leave on his own. I was advised by a lawyer that the only ways are dr-gs, g-ns, violence, racism, s-xual harassment, and threats are the only things to watch. Just looking for advice to make it to RE and beyond. I can leave at 55 if I want but I could stay till 58 if possible.

Not very common: to be NSI'd btwn 52-55. Very very common: see your ranking plummet to NI btwn 52-55, where you will remain till your 55th birthday, after which say hello to NSI.
I was almost 55 when I was PIPed and know of a few more in their early 50's who were NSI'd. The general trend I see is that if you're on your 50's and you're not in a management role already, you are useless. They will try their best to kick you out. I wish I knew this early in my career at XOM. I am no longer with XOM but still licking my wounds that never heal.
If they dare fire you while NRE you will have a lawsuit brewing. Age discrimination and the fact exxon saves so much money by getting rid of you would be the basis of the case. In know a few who did not do anything for the last years and exxon did nothing to them. While NRE show up do your 8 hours work or not and leave. Stay clear of we-pons, dr-gs and alcohol and you will be fine. Once RE you are toast and it is just a matter of time.
Yes. Midland Facilities before Covid. There was an Engineer close to retire on 2019, but EM think that he was too old and EM did not give the opportunity to retire, and he was NRE three months before his retiremement.
Yes from 52 to 55 your are protected and cannot be piped. You will placed on a PCP plan that is meant for your improvement. You do not need to pass or even participate in the plan if you wish. A former employee refused the pcp plan because they were too busy and said if I do this plan I will fall further in the ranking. Nothing happened to them and they made to 60 and then retired. So feel good if you are NRE because you are almost guaranteed a retirement.
I was being watched and pushed out. I had some trouble and went to HR mid career. I was supposedly protected for retaliation but in the end I was hit. I made it through NRE and got to RE. As soon as I was NRE my ranking dropped. My new manager was an old friend of the one I went to HR on. I could not succeed no mater what I did. I was always deficient in some minor way. The HR cases was closed with out any resolution. The supervisor who committed the s-xual harassment act was moved and later promoted. He never forgot the case and was bent on revenge. I was piped at 58 years and assured that I could pass the pip. I knew In was being watched and my every move scrutinized. The reason was a lack of delegation even though I had no one under myself to delegate to. I was told I should have gone to someone outside of my group to delegate and get help. All of our work groups were dysfunctional and not friendly to each other. When I tried to get help In was ignored. I was targeted as soon as I was NRE and even more at RE. I am glad I left exxon because it was ki-ling me. I choose retirement due to pip. I told everyone I was retiring because of piping. The pip manager went behind me and told everyone I choose to retire and could have passed the pip. Just my bad experience.
I know a guy that was NSI at 54. Had to do an improvement Plan but was not eligible to take PIL or be terminated at end of Improvement Plan.
