How do you see Splunk as being able to replace all the other parts of Cisco security?

All of the security products Cisco has acquired are treated as silos. None of them can handle the traffic and features of all of them, and this is why Cisco cannot sell a unified platform; all of the individual acquired services are maxed out just doing what they did at time of acquisition.

So, to present a unified platform, Cisco needed to first buy or build a platform that could scale to manage all of the scale and types of traffic handled by the disparate legacy acquired security services. We all know Cisco can't build anything like that, so they had to buy something.

Splunk handles traffic and scale at a level way beyond any of the legacy services. So it can be the basis of a data and operational platform to unify security services onto.

We're already seeing it...they acquired something called Snap Attack to put threat detection on top of Splunk's platform...even though Cisco already runs a legacy threat detection service.

tl;dr:, Splunk will be the "2.0" Security group

they are trying to rebuild the security business on top of Splunk... Cisco...will be able to LR pretty much the entire legacy security group

Splunk collects, processes and displays data. Security is far more than that. How do you see Splunk as being able to replace all the other parts of Cisco security?

same as it has been for some time

there's enough money sloshing around in security to guarantee even a laggard like Cisco will get some sales

its just the same acquired junk that is endlessly patched and peddled...its run like a legacy business even though the security market is still in its infancy

they are trying to rebuild the security business on top of Splunk and if they succeed, Cisco may finally have a unified platform and will be able to LR pretty much the entire legacy security group

Growing at 4% is significantly below the industry average. EC, SS and their PAN friends have destroyed the security business. They think since they were all at PAN that they know what it takes. Guess what, PAN still growing double digits and and above the industry average. So…, maybe EC, SS and their PAN friends are not what is needed. PAN sure does not need them as demonstrated by their growth. At one point, we were growing high single digits before them, then they came in and have taken us to negative growth / minimal growth. Chuck is going to make a change as he is aware of the ineptness of the PAN folks.
