To focus on their core distribution business. USF bought Freshway to learn about the fresh processing business. They planned to vertically integrate but Freshway was too small to support all USF divisions. Then the smart people exited and the clueless didn’t know what to do. Meanwhile, Freshway was selling directly to USF customers and undermining the business. Brilliant strategy.
