Question for IC at grade 12 or above - what was the process like for you to get promoted to grade 12? I’m not talking about the typically expected stuff, such as 8+ years at grade 11, consistent high/over performer with track record of very good reviews, and high visibility both internally and with customers. I’m asking about what else, on top of that, did you need to do for promotion to grade 12? Did you need to recruit senior people internally to sponsor/recommend you for promotion? Were you given a special task/project as a kind of test to earn your promotion?

I’ve been stuck at grade 10 for a while and it’s so frustrating. I led a significant portion of a project that was supposed to push me into the next grade, but my manager gives me the same BS. “You are doing great, no feedback.” I’m pretty sure my manager is trying to get me to leave.
"CX is promoting G11s to G12 regardless of performance. All you need is one year as G11"
All are performance based meaning day 1 you are expected to be there. This just opens the door to act and to place the blame for it on the FLM, not the incompetence of the ELT. Reviews are very soon so if you are told you aren't there today it's doubtful you will be there in 3 months so start planning.
Combination of timing, seizing opportunities and building relationships with the right decision makers and proving myself.
Having been on many teams where the first priority changes every 15 minutes and management is constantly threatening to fire everyone on the project at every site showing up with something really important that wasn't previously authorized can be a great way to end your career at Cisco. I've also seen great work go unacknowledged and people making individual decisions that delayed products by years and sometimes ultimately cancelled move up the line, so the only real key is "building relationships with the right decision makers." If you aren't within reach of their ingroup or you aren't both maintaining and growing skills even without the promotion which you could then sell elsewhere it's past time to move on, and this rule applies everywhere.
I was hired in at grade 10, made grade 12 two years later. Combination of timing, seizing opportunities and building relationships with the right decision makers and proving myself. It can be done, don’t let the folks stuck at 10’s &11’s for years tell you it can’t be done.
highly dependent on your manager.
Like that quote from Shawshank Redemption, “Get busy chasing promotion, or get busy leaving”. For some of us, it’s up or out.
Why bother chasing this? it's soo damn hard to qualify and not remotely guaranteed after you put in all the work and show you are worthy. You spend year(s) working extra hard, giving the company everything you've got to get to G12 only to be denied. All that work, un-paid, not recognized, nothing. It's a sh---y process and Cisco knows it. Designed to squeeze more work from you with zero reward. If you are able to have an open/honest convo with your FLM, they will tell you the same. Tho... most are probably too scared to admit it
if you are in DC, you need to be an IIT alumni.. just like the mgmt team is plagued with it. (wait for this comment to be deleted... )
the only thing you need is to wait, nothing else to do
You have to demonstrate efficiency in su-king up to manager and VP.
there is a packet that needs to be filled out from grade 10 and up which requires two references from colleagues you have worked with. grade 12 requires VP approval so you should have large visibility outside of your own team
