“Any manager whose job it is to collect data from level below, reformat, and push it up the chain."

Isn't that something like 95% of Dell managers?”

That was my point — With HR and finance making 90% of non-technical decisions and marketing being reduced to reading what Apple is doing next and reacting; most managers could be replaced by AI systems. Anyone old enough to remember Uniblab from the old Jetsons cartoons? He took the supervisor’s job that George was gunning for.

The ratio is 1:18 now which has lead to managers scrambling. Others are being helped out the door if they can't make it as ICs.

With scrum and agile, managers will now be people managers only with no less than 16 direct reports. The days of the technical manager leading a small focused team are through. Get used to working for Dell heritage boy scout knobbers based out of RR.

I'm not sure its just about 'layers' - there are so many 'managers' at a higher level that are so clearly out their depth its frightening - all of these should be removed. Decent ICs yes but leaders they certainly are not. These 'managers' tell their staff that building your brand and networking are keys to success - What that means is be the best boot-li---r you can be. How about we hire managers that spend less time boot licking and get back to making decisions and rewarding meritocracy.

Some managers could be replaced by AI and we are the AI company. If you believe the press releases.

‘Do the needful’ one of the most insipid expressions since ‘It is what it is’.

That aside, Dell could eliminate at least a couple of layers of management.
Any manager with less than three direct reports who are ICs
Any manager whose job it is to collect data from level below, reformat, and push it up the chain.
Any manager who spends more time as a ‘mentor’ than managing.
