Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

The severed mind of a Dell manager.

The severed mind of the Dell Manager.

During Review: “There’s no money for you to get a raise, inspite of a stellar review. We have to reward our top performers, which left nothing for the others.”

Today - first thing emails from manager. “Because of the holiday in Ireland and several planned absences in the US and Canada, please be available to support their customers”

subtext (why don;t you just quit?”

Sounds like you have it made, they don't consider you a top performer which means you won't have to do much. I pity the people that are top performers.

"So cost of living means $hit with this ranking system."

Dell has never cared about the cost of living. In 2022 inflation hit 8% and I got no raise, despite having higher than average KPIs across the board while also assistingmy boss with some ofvher duties. When I asked my boss about a pay raise to offset inflation I was referred to HR, who after about 8 weeks of silence basically told me to pound sand. I knew how it was going to go so aused those 8 weeks to burn off my PTO and find another job. The day I was supposed to return I sent my boss a letter of resignation and explained my badge and all work issued equipment were at my desk. She was calling me within a minute or two trying to give me the "Let's not make rash decisions" and "We really need you today" speeches. I said somthing to the effect that it's no longer my problem, said goodbye then blocked her number.

Ranking system is based on how valuable your work is to your team and it's goals

Managers play favorites. I know a few reps not close to 100% for the year received 5-8% increase. They should be on pips.

The reality is that People Leaders (Sr Directors, Directors, Mgrs) are required to stack rank their teams. If you are in the bottom 20% of that ranking, they are required to give you less. They are also supposed to give more to the top 10-20%. If you are on a team of SuperStars, it doesn't matter. Someone is at the bottom.

I think the psychological term is called cognitive dissonance. It’s what happens when you don’t see the conflict that any rational person would perceive.

Like when you see oncology staff outside in the hospital smoking area.
