Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

Is Staples really over?

I have an offer on the table within the company and started reading this board. Holy god. Is it really that bad? People seem to hate the recruiters and top leadership? My interviews were pleasant. My recruiter seemed to push me through the process quickly and really liked me. Said they would “pull some strings” to get me ahead of other candidates which was nice and the manager moved the interviews very fast. Should I decline my offer?

Actually if you are close to retirement forget about it. You will never make it 4-5 years. This company does not appreciate older experienced people and you will be cut and then you will be looking for another job even older and it’s tough out there. Coasting does not work at Staples if you are older. Younger yes you can coast.

Just by asking the question I feel like you already know the answer.

If you have a job, I would keep it. If you are unemployed or it would add to your career portfolio then go ahead and take it. Just do not expect to be there long. Staples is preparing to close the majority, if not all, physical stores. Sycamore also owns HiTouch, Quill and Essendant. All are limping along with mass layoffs and varied smaller layoffs throughout the year. Walgreens will soon be pieced out and sold off.

Staples is a place to coast until retirement. It is not a long-term career building company. Sycamore has not invested in Staples since ownership. They have saddled Staples with unmanageable debt and sold off all assets. Staples will limp along as a revenue stream for Sycamore until it's not. Staples is small peanuts to Sycamore compared to their newest acquisition Walgreens.

If you are not 3 - 5 yrs away from retirement, Staples is likely not the place for you.
