RTO 1 hour from office

Right from the horses mouth on the Town hall meeting. DS said, "I'm not gonna debate with you if you are 45 mins or an hour from the office. You all have to be back in the office."

This 1hr cr-p is again for their benefit. Only done because they knew they didnt have capacity. So remember when they pushed the "remote work is the future" stuff and people moved away from the big smoke... well they will expect you move back again or walk.

"For those of you doing the math, you also have to factor in car payments and insurance for those of us who did not have cars previously. My significant other also works from home. So, for the past 3 years, we shared a car. Under this RTO mandate, I would have to buy one just for my use."

No one is telling you need to buy a car, you could move to a place that is walkable to the office, you could figure out public transport. No where in the FAQs does it say if you don't own a car that you have to buy one. As an adult, you can make decisions about your life, Don't like it here, quit and go somewhere else. Stop whining. Your argument is similar to those who say "now I have to pay a gym membership or pay for day care since I have to come to the office now" - those are choices, not requirements of the company.

nobody cares what you have to pay. We all pay, you're not special even though you would like to think you are.

Average car payment (in my state)/month: $530 - $730
Average Insurance/month: $100 - $300
Tolls (for my commute/month): $250
Average Gas (for my commute/month): $200
Depreciation (for excessive mileage)/Maintenance/month: $400

All so some executive can show that they're in control.

"You bringing your sack lunch too buddy?

Estimated Annual Gas Cost:
• Fuel-efficient car (30-40 MPG): ~$2,250 – $3,000
• Average sedan (25 MPG): ~$3,600
• Truck/SUV (15-20 MPG): ~$4,500 – $6,000

This is just the gas cost. There is other expenses like maintenance, tires, and depreciation should also be considered if you’re commuting this far.

If you’re commuting, you’re more likely to buy food and coffee instead of eating at home. How much in food per day? $20 to $30

Annual Cost (50 workweeks per year):
• $100 × 50 weeks = $5,000 per year
• $150 × 50 weeks = $7,500 per year

Give us your best yearly price all in? You can also include health costs, work clothes etc."

  • Yes, I actually cook/prep all of my own meals, always have.
  • I drive a 15-20 mpg SUV, it's only 2 additional days, so you need to subtract 60% of your totals (and throw in flexibility and time away and you need to reduce it by 75%)
  • It's your choice to own the type of vehicle you own, cost of ownership is something you assume when you buy the vehicle, work didn't force you to get it or even own a vehicle for that matter
  • Health costs and clothes are the same. We don't have a dress code, so no need to buy additional clothing

Stop trying to generate false information to support your narrative and be an adult.

"$10k to $15k pay cut for everyone making the commute. And no soup (desk) for you."

That's absurd, i drive a gas guzzler and premium fuel and I'll only spend $768 more than I was going in 3 days a week with a 60 mile commute.

"Simple concept. It's an adult job.l - 5 days per week, 8 hrs per day, 40 hrs per week."

Simple concept. Every metric used to measure my performance increased significantly when WFH started. So Dell should expect a similar decrease with forced RTO.

He actually said he didn't care if you were 65 minutes from the office. The expectation is everyone RTOs.

The thing leadership isn't taking into account with the commute cr-p. Sure, you may have two people with an approximate 1hr commute, but one person is having to drive 10 miles while sitting in lots of traffic while the other is driving 80 miles with light traffic. Still an hour from the office.

The person driving 160 miles a day is taking a very real, very measurable pay cut of $8-15k a year. That's why this has been so half baked. There's zero logic or direction in how they're making these determinations. Be transparent. Show us exactly how you're calculating the 1hr. Bring back the amenities. Fix the cafeterias. Bring back the shuttles in RR. Give people their own space. All stuff that should have been done before the policy was rolled out

Unfortunately, this has been a very typical Dell deployment

I’m not paid for 40 hours I’m paid for my knowledge and efficiency. If I’m good and efficient enough to finish work before 40 hours I will not feel guilty doing other activities.

This isn't a Burger King.

It is very easy to determine who is getting work done and who is not. Lots of people have no issue driving into an office and doing absolutely nothing all day. Cut the people who aren't pulling their weight with the workload.
