Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

“This isn’t your grandfather’s railroad”

That statement is UP 100%. When previous generations worked here, it was something to be proud of. The railroad took care of them and offered good lifetime employment. They were also treated with respect. Now, nothing like that. That is why morale is at an all time low and people are quitting left and right, or forced out. It has nothing to do with the current generation being lazy, they are not treated as good as previous ones. Thank you Fritz and Vena for tearing apart a once great company. Enjoy your millions.

@17n Absolutely spoken like a true circle queen UP manager! I'm just going to proactively say thank you for helping me to make my next point. Your comment highlights the very reasons why the UP management can't be trusted. I've seen people get yelled for answering the phones and giving a response to a manager that they just didn't want to hear. Please tell the rest of us how answering a phone is risky and dangerous behavior when it comes to life or limb? Is it fair to the employees to be cussed out and yelled at because the manager didn't get their way? NO! You have no problem pointing the finger at the lower employees when something goes wrong, and take ZERO accountability for your actions when it does go wrong. It always seems to never be management's fault, but yet all of the operational decisions have to come from management. You as a manager only see and hear what you want to see and hear. The problems at the UP is because of the current management, which believe it or not includes you! You can deny that the yelling and swearing is actually happening to the lower employees all you want, but if it weren't true then you wouldn't be on here trying to defend yourself as a manager. These are dangerous jobs, but bogus management is making this job way harder than it needs to be for no reason at all! As a manager, can you honestly tell anyone on here that your a fair and honest manager? Go ahead, because no one will believe you. An honest manager looks for ways to work with their employees to keep them safe. They don't look for ways to write those employees up or fire them because they blew their nose incorrectly, then throw the book at them as soon as they see it. A good manager would see at-risk behavior and kindly talk to them about it. If you want a better understanding of the problems at the UP, then I'd strongly suggest you find a mirror and look into it! Your post tells me that you'd rather be a part of the problem, instead of a part of the solution. There's no reason for any manager to be yelling and swearing at any employee, ever! The bright side to all of this is that there's some managers who are starting to realize that their jobs aren't as safe as they thought! You might want think about that before you pop off to an employee.

Not saying not to report incidents to the values line but does anyone believe if a manager was reported to the values line, is proven the manager was in the wrong, that anything would improve? Would upper management acknowledge the true need for headcount and allocate more headcount to that manager? Or would the manager would attend a class at “charm school” and go right back to being the supervisor of the employee(s) who reported them? Even IF(!) by miracle they did allocate addition manpower to said manager who believes they wouldnt do the old trick of taking the headcount from some other work group as to not have to re-budget in the bigger picture. Its these little tricks of their trade practiced and followed by so many managers that has ruined the company culture.

Report the managers to the Values Line if they are requiring you to do something against the rules or policy. It’s the only way the company will investigate it.

Question mr 17yr manager. When a manager instructs an employee they have authority over to keeping working after the employee has surpassed the hours of service is the manager doing their job? When this scenario keeps happening is management doing their job and ensuring there is enough man power to safely perform every task to completion in a safe time frame, every single day? I get it, many managers cant hire or add to their headcount as per their individual decisions. But when it is obvious there is insufficient man power why do so many managers get angry at the employees doing the work? Its not the employees fault there isn't enough of them. So many managers get mad at employees for employees resisting to break rules to help the manager avoid upsetting their manager. So many managers reward employees who break rules when it benefits the manager. Is that proper leadership? Managers should never ever never promote, suggest, or even once break a rule, law, or policy themselves. All managers should Lead by example. We shouldnt even need to have the right to challenge, there shouldnt be a need to even think an employee would ever have to challenge a manager when it comes to compliance.

As a 23 year employee who has worked for 17 as a manager I have only seen employees yelled at when they did something that could have cost them their lives or limbs. This is a grown ups world with life altering consequences for taking risks or short cuts. Remember it’s a job that pays us all to do “our” jobs.

@dk Okay so are we just supposed to hide under a rock and not say anything? If the management wants to get me on something, then they know where I'm at. I'm way too old to give a dam what they think, and many of them are going to fudge the facts to get that write-up under their belt anyways! I do care about the rules, policies, and most importantly my co-workers. You're probably a person who's let people walk all over you your whole life, and i can't blame you because that's probably what your accustomed too. I will NEVER let anyone treat myself or others with the level of disrespect that you just showed to the people who have the courage to speak up. If you came on here only to show how disrespectful you can be, then GREAT JOB!

Report to a manager something needs to be fixed / replaced and the employee gets yelled at, blamed, and threatened. When another manager tells that same manager the exact same thing needs to be fixed / replaced that same manager yells, blames, and threatens the same poor employee. Behind the scenes its whispered this is just how it is and this is how agreement employees should expect to be treated bcuz they didnt go to college. Managements attitude is wether right or wrong, truth or lies you are paid not only for the work you do but also for them to blame employees for the results of managements bad decisions. Management needs to be held responsible for everything wrong here.

I couldn't have said it any better! The current UP workforce is tired of the games, and the incompetent management. Every time a new CEO takes over, it just gets worse for the employees. Yes, people are leaving because of the BS games. If any RR wants to continue down this path of treating the employees like pickled dogsh1t, then they deserve to be the worst company and everythingthat goes with it. Everyone can be replaced, but their knowledge and years of experience cannot! Good luck to the UP or any RR for that matter in finding enough people that'll be willing to put up with it.
