goodyear published it will reduce its workforce at the danville plant in virginia as part of a much wider costcutting effort... the facility currently employs around 1,700 people... it will soon cut just about 850 jobs as it shifts truck tire manufacturing ops to other north american sites. the company plans to retool danville’s operations to focus on mixing and aviation tires. they offered no confirmed timeline yet for when these layoffs will take place or how quickly the cuts will unfold.
danville city mgr said that the case is a "clear blow" to the local community. “Goodyear has been a significant employer in Danville for decades"..... the city plans to work w/ state and others to provide resources such as job placement and training for laid off employes.
this all panned out after negotiations between Goodyear and the united steelworkers union eneded up in an agreement affecting 850 employees at the truck tire facility. in future danville’s plant will specialize in mixing operations and aviation tires... the decision wants to cut costs with target savings reaching $65 million from 2026 (yearly savings).
goodyear opened its danville in 1966... currently occupies a big facility with over two million square ft on 56 acres. until Dec, the plant employed about 1700 people, it is the city’s largest employer (ever since the closure of dan river mills). despite the cuts, folks are hoping things will turn for the better but that will be hard...
