Service Awards

Got a service award for 5 years. Does anyone know what it is? Some sort of glass paper weight or something?

I received a sales award, 8-inch glass paper weight. End of year, I got a 1099? for over $900.00. Net year, I received an email asking how I wanted my name spelled on the glass thing, I said keep it. I also got a 1099? for a few Everyday wins picks. I am no longer there so I do not know what the current status is.

I remember getting that rock. D-mbest thing ever. I mean, really? Who thought that would be motivating? The garbage pails must have been a bit heavier that week.

The catch is you have to work the mines to get your own rock.

Maybe they’ll give you rock from the original 3M mine.

Long timers, back when 3M was THE company to work for in the Twin Cities, remember having celebrations at Tartan Park. Inge dumped Tartan for a song to avoid having activist investors claim (like they did to take out the Dupont CEO) that it was an example of "waste."

Glad I'm retired and still have good memories from the past. This company culture is like a bad case of STD. Just hope for a package.

The sentiment they are given with is worth less than the trinket itself.

Had to wait 15 years for my first trinket. Getting the certificate was anti climactic, my rogue boss who was ultimately fired passed it to a coworker to give to me at a boss-less team meeting. The company banquet with live entertainment was pretty cool.

I was there for more than 25 years and not once did my manager celebrate with me. I made a point of celebrating with my staff, but no one ever did so with me.

At the end of my meeting with my manager few years ago, he reached into a drawer in his desk and handed me the paper certificate in cheap plastic frame. He said: "this is for you", then he scowled at me and asked: "you don't want a party for this, do you?". I assured him I don't want a party. "good, we don't have the budget for such things" was his response. I walked out of his office and deposited the certificate in the nearest trash can. I have been retired for a few years now but I heard this manager is a senior vice president now.

I got mine last year - even though I had moved to Solventum it still seemed to be executed by 3M. I got a list of promo items to choose from, kind of like Everyday Wins. Ended up with a camping chair. Much better than the paper weight a colleague got the previous year.

5, 10, 15, and 20 were a paper certificate in a cheap plastic frame. Don’t hold your breath.

Service awards are meaningless to top managment 3M values. It is still a task, but robotic without the true implied appreciation. I know plenty of folks who put them in the trash after leaving, and others still on the books here that look at them with a laugh. I also know middle managment that do value their teams.

Did it come with the receipt from Things Remembered?

Try to return it for the cash value.

Congrats on five years. If this had been achieved with a company that respects, trains, recognizes, promotes, and supports its employees, you’d be paid 30 percent more as a result of your market value, have brighter advancement opportunity, and be excited about your professional future. Enjoy the paperweight.
