I don’t know why Macy’s doesn’t take a portion of their profits and just donate to these charities like Bag Hunger. I actually do know why! They are cheap and they do this because they get a tax incentive so they rely on the employees to cough up the money that we’re barely making because everything is so expensive. I think it’s beyond tone deaf. The audacity to push for us to donate. I get the struggle and believe me, if I had Tony’s bank account, I’d be very generous. I don’t know what execs and VPs shell out but when it comes to Happy Hours, or team outings or charities, we have to pay for everything when we are not being fairly compensated. It’s incredibly frustrating.

I stopped donating a loooong time ago. The managers at my store would come look for us all week and get pushy when the deadline was near. Not taking Pennie’s out of my paycheck when that’s what they pay us.
I remember this annual event as well as others at Macy’s San Francisco Union Square. More importance was placed on executing events to get the employees (mostly hourly) to donate vs. driving sales & providing service to the customers in the store. And of course, the a-s-kissers that usually just sat in their offices were the ones that used this as an opportunity to self promote themselves. Saddest part is that this was condoned, encouraged and celebrated by upper management. Even sadder, it’s still going on. One of the managers at store manager, district level or above could have easily donated the $100 that these “begging events” produced without distracting from driving sales and negatively affecting customer service. As a store level manager, I used to just take a couple hundred dollars and say I had this great make believe event to raise money and the upper management used this to “self promote” themselves. Is Macy’s in business to sell merchandise providing excellent customer service OR is the priority to have the manager’s executing BAKE SALE/HOT DOG CART/ETC. events to raise money for charity from the hourly employees. Is really more than a circus. The “worst of the WORST” lazy SELF-PROMOTING “so-called” managers are the very ones who live for this kind of behavior. It was an EMBARRASSMENT and still must be to the few MANAGERS that still care and actually work to drives sales and provide service to the customers.
Ehh not to get all woowoo and spiritual but I believe what I give out comes right back! It's for a good cause so I don't mind. I can see how frustrating someone can get if being asked when they are having money problems at home though. Could be a touchy question.
What?? It's a great company initiative. Macys matches donations and you don't have to donate. We also drive donations through fun, engaging events... which Macy's pay for..like hot dog lunches, etc. If you can't afford to donate, don't. Noone will judge you for that.
You folks work in stores or corporate? We're not pushed to donate in my store. We do a game called Penny Wars. Fun, anyone can participate with less than a dollar
I hate how they hound colleagues to donate to these causes. I appreciate that I work for a charitable company that supports so many great causes but really don’t appreciate the constant asking, almost harassment. They want to suggest an amount I donate…how about I suggest an amount for a raise they give us? I shouldn’t have to justify why I don’t donate or donate more.
If you actually read the email, Macy’s matches every donation…. just like they do every year.
