Another Round of Layoffs. 7% Reduction With Replacements In India

Same problem as before, terrible leadership has caused the need for another round of layoffs. This time 7%-9% of total workforce. Meanwhile we continue to hire for various positions and just completed a fancy new 50,000 square foot office in India.

Co-CEO Owen recently answered a question at a Townhall about the missing of certain expectations from Wall Street and divulged that annual reviews always came up great for individual performances, and yet here we are with a suffering stock price…so obviously there’s an “overvaluation of the workforce of itself”. Rather than look at themselves in the mirror, Owen, Therese, Charlie, and the rest of the C-Level are blaming the employees instead of the culprit being their ineptitude as it pertains to software engineering, delivery, and sales in a SaaS model. From Sales & Marketing to Product, BlackLine has been getting ran into the ground by accountants who refuse to acknowledge their own limitations as they pertain to the ins and outs of enterprise software. It has some of the most talented engineering teams, but even those are being slowly replaced by cheaper / mediocre engineers in India. And to make the abuse even worse, reviews are being contrived as bad to foster the narrative of blame, thus justifying the lack of RSU grants, raises or bonuses to their top performers.

It’s a disgustingly sad time for BlackLine as it’s destroyed by the arrogance of its founder and her narcissistic lack of self-awareness (a posture which she has made contagious across the C-Suite).

Leadership has failed to address key issues and continues to focus on the wrong priorities. Co-CEO Owen’s past inappropriate remarks and belittling of employees executing his misguided strategies should have led to his removal long ago. What was once a customer-centric culture has become toxic. Despite years of customer complaints about a rigid licensing model and resource-su-king implementations, the company has stubbornly refused to adapt, pushing customers to more flexible competitors. Instead of taking responsibility, leadership blames employees, a tired and farfetched narrative. Where is the board? Their
inaction raises questions about its effectiveness. BlackLine needs to listen to customer feedback and course correct before it’s too late.

People stay in jobs because they need to earn a living. With the right people and right attitude, amazing things can happen for an organization (which it did in the past for BL). When leadership becomes dishonest, and disinterested in the people, the organization crumbles. This should be a learning lesson. Instead of blaming people being “negative”. Have some self awareness as to what causes amazing people to become unhappy. Perhaps your choice in management and favoritism. Just a thought.

With a huge need and wide-open market, BlackLine hasn't gotten past a few dozen new customers a year for the past few (higher revenue significantly driven by higher rates).

Much could be said about their business strategy (ahem), but as my mama used to say: "It's the product, stupid!". If it were so good, BL sales would be in the billions.

And the lovely office in India isn't what will solve this problem.

It’s a terrible time for BlackLine and the culture has been toxic seeping from inside out. However leadership and the co-CEOs are who have caused the negativity and toxic workplace. People loved the company. They poured years of their service, energy and enthusiasm to building it up. They are and have been treated like absolute garbage for several years. The consultant red tape and hopes they have to jump through is absurd to say the least. No other actual consulting company actually runs this way. It’s a software company, not the big 4. Stop trying to be one.

It’s a sad day when a culture that once thrived on positivity and support for employees turns its back on those who have worked tirelessly to keep the company afloat. The narrative of cutting underperformers is a shameful lie to mask the incompetence at the top. It’s clear that the real goal has been cost-cutting, with the path forward focusing on shifting more positions to India.

2 ceo's, admins who have admins, overlay galore, transformation office that transforms nothing. the layers and fat are overt and yet you 'manage out 130' because you are trying to up level talent and performance? on the heels of the worst earnings and reaction since the company has been listed. not buying that it wasn't for cost savings for Wall Street.

Why do we need 2 CEOs and so many C level executives? Shouldn’t they get rid of the redundancy at the C level?

Not sure why you presume I haven’t already moved on recently or wasn’t one of the folks in one of the aforementioned layoffs? As to why someone would stay in a position given these things at play, I would say that you sound very insulated from the overall economic realities from the last several years. I don’t know who you are either (since as you say, this is anonymous) so I’ll just call you Therese since I can’t think of anything else.

Hi interesting thoughts anonymous, not sure who you are as this is anonymous but let's make up a name let's call you Trevor as I can't think of anything else. So Trevor if you felt this strongly why and this is an assumption did you or are still working for an organisation you feel like this about?...we spend so much time at work don't you have to be happy in that place, if not then surely it's time to move on...if you believe it's that negative won't the effort you put in be negative..just a thought..

agree with much of the above. it is the culmination of a lot which is resulting in this sad stage for the company that many people poured a lot into. Founder left and couldn't help but distract a mettle in the business with prior leadership. this board of directors allowed and enabled and has built this team which is destroying value in the company. bl sells less than before, has more consulting bureaucracy than anyone, and has become employee hostile. sad

I would also add Jimmy as the CCO into the mix. The C-Suite just doesnt understand SaaS nor its customers.
