This is currently happening in the Harrington span. Amazon has begun "descoping" senior Level 7 managers by removing their direct reports, effectively rendering their roles obsolete. The goal appears to be regaining unvested stock. Many of these managers, with over 10 years of tenure, hold millions in unvested stock. By stripping them of responsibilities, Amazon seemingly hopes they will leave voluntarily, allowing the company to reclaim stock it never truly intended to vest.
