Thread regarding Pacific Life layoffs

NAME & SHAME: DO NOT APPLY/WORK HERE EVER

If you're a tech worker (data, SWE, IT, etc.) thinking about applying here....

These sc-mbags made me go through 6 rounds of interviews through 3 months, including a demeaning technical HireVue first round, recruiter round, every team member I'd work with round, hiring manger round, and then director round. Forgot to mention the room-temp IQ HR bimbo fumbled every single one of the team member rounds and sent them the wrong times, causing me to wait almost an hour in the lobby until I took it upon myself to correctly guess the interviewers' emails, which finally caught their attention and led to action. Utterly useless. After that, it was positive though.

Every round went very well. Every step of the way, the recruiter kept following up telling me I was given nothing but positive feedback and we even discussed salary range and potential time window for start date since I'd have to move. I was told after the final round that they were going to do an additional final round with the director of DS (who himself told me he is not a decision maker in the process). I worked my schedule around the holidays and my current job (at a MUCH better company mind you) to accommodate this additional final round. He ended up asking openly racist questions, specifically about an Indian colleague I had interviewed with in an earlier round (which is rich considering he barely spoke coherent English himself), and I was stunned to see the incompetence displayed from someone with a supposed PhD in Statistics. Overall, it felt fine. He said he wasn't involved himself, but that the team would meet that week and get back to me the next week. This was over 2 months ago.

After that, crickets. I followed up few weeks later with the recruiter asking for an update and thanked the interviewers and all that, nothing.

The best part is that the job posting has been reposted 3 times since then, and on Workday, my status still shows "interview". They have been trying to hire a Sr. Data Scientist and an "AI Engineer" (lmao) for months now. Everyone I know at the company has LinkedIn Premium on and has told me they are actively looking to leave now that I've reached out. The hiring manager told me this was a backfill role and they are looking to fill this role, as well as other tech roles, ASAP.... in November. LMAO.

The recruiter bimbo did let it slip that this is a new interview process they are trying out, so it appears I was simply a guinea pig for these snakes to test out their new process. Keep in mind these clowns didnt even ask Leetcode/sys design or any live coding round for an ML role. The average profile of their data/software folks is laughably below average, as is their pay.

I genuinely cannot believe that this is how this company operates, and am mad at myself for ever stooping down to this joke of a company's level, even if it would've been for a temp job while I looked for a better role in this market. Either way - don't make the same mistake I did.

Please save yourself the time... and NEVER, and I mean NEVER, EVER APPLY TO ANY JOB AT PACIFIC LIFE INSURANCE, ESPECIALLY IF IT IS A TECH/IT/DATA/SWE TYPE ROLE. Thank me later. Disgusting.

Thanks for sharing. I definitely dodged a bullet after reading your dreadful experience.

They have a bunch of IT/Tech roles opening in the Charlotte area. However, the company appears to have high turnover and a culture of posturing and theater.

There's one thing I would like to mention about your interview process. Expecting Leetcode in an era where memorizing syntax and algorithms is no longer viewed as productive.

@a3 I have an interview with this company and all of this is terrifying me, especially since I really don't want to work in a "hybrid" setting.

I have worked at PL and you're correct. It's a nice slow friendly culture... it's not a tech company and they know it. I will say that you are funny but if an inkling of this arrogance came through at any point in your tone, that's probably what turned them off.

my sister works here as a data analyst and she wont say it, but i will - she thinks the data org has a mean girls culture, the technical bar is 6 feet under, and she's stuck in bullsh-t scrum meetings all day long, not doing any analysis. over the months, shes revealed in convos that her coworkers didnt know things like a self join, a tuple, or when to use a having clause in SQL.......... yeaaaahhhh.... all ya need to know hahaha

Wow, OP - I'm a DS here in NY. I am very disappointed in my company after reading this. I'd be livid if it were me. Good on you to try and warn others. Did the HR lady and recruiter ladies' names start with T and D by chance ? If so, I know who to contact to ensure they're held accountable for this (wouldn't be the first time if it's those two...).

I'm a Senior Data Scientist at PL. I'm so sorry about this. Not sure who you interacted with in your process, but it sounds like a place I'd never work for.

It may be time for me to look elsewhere... thank you for sharing this.

This is hilarious because I know exactly what happened. You dodged a bullet, OP. Trust me. Like @a3+1, I have been hunting for almost a year now but am finding the market to be awful, and companies not respecting my PL experience. Best of luck to you, and anyone who may read this as a prospective applicant.

Funny I happen to check here after hearing murmurs... let me say that I know J.S. the director of DS you speak of, very well. You are correct. His direct reports, I.E. in particular, who I suspect would have been the hiring manager in your case, is also just as incompetent. I concur with everything you said (especially about the talent and pay being subpar), apologize for that as an employee myself (been interviewing like a MF tryna get out of this dump lol), and tell all potential employees to heed this warning. Godspeed. Also, HR if you're reading this, do better.
