Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Why would people quit 3M

Paid FMLA above the law, no performance reviews for employees 40 hours caregiver 40 hours roll over vacation. 2 ev days every year. 7 points till you fired. Hr don’t support management. Get paid to stay home the real question is how much of a kick back does 3M and Sedgwick get from FMLA. There is no policy’s. Don’t work you the bast. Average attendance in us plants 54% my plant has 5-7 call out a day with a thank you for calling in. Can anyone relate 3M corporate needs a reality check can’t run a business like this!

3M is a great place for average folks.

If you are a young, ambitious person fresh out of college or university with stellar credentials, this is definitely not the place for you.

3M has been for a while now an Old School Materials Science company. No breakthroughs in a long time, not for lack of good people, but poor leadership and pretty much zero reward for doing new, true innovative work. It has become a place where what you do doesn't matter too much, what matters is whom you know !

The carry over vacation hours are for production operators. They can carry over 40 hours per year and they have to be used first in the next year. This started in 2024.

3M Center was a happy and productive place in the 80s and 90s, even during Desi's somewhat meandering strategic plans.

What Mcnerney wounded with his GE style imposed survived a decent time (but not as good as 80s and 90s days) under Sir George. Then Inge got the head huncho job (wished Joe Harlan had gotten it) the slide continued until life at the Center resembled a dystopian corporate society under the M&M boys and tireman.

BB was mad it was a demoralized ghost town when he made his once a month visits and decided WFH was a toxin and he alone had the antidote. If heat sensors are really under desks now, then what's next? Big Brother style telescopes with 2 way cameras?

I have a lot of autonomy, I get paid a fair wage. Invention is play for me. I feel sorry for coworkers who don’t have that and for those that did and were let go. Honestly, outside of my lab I find it hard to breathe at 3M Center anymore. If I were younger, I’d look elsewhere to build a career. As I’m older, I’ll retire from 3M sooner than planned and find a place to play where leadership knows what it is to create something beyond an org chart, where employees are valued as assets not treated as liabilities.

On days when I have to be in the office I waste my time chatting and waking around and performing productivity theater because leadership is too d-mb to tell the difference between someone doing actual work and just warming a chair. And I sure as he-l don't get anything done.

But at home, I send emails, maybe crank out some PowerPoint slides or some Excel spreadsheets, and I do a bit of work.

I also get a couple loads of laundry done, maybe get some chicken marinated, take my dog for a little walk, and just generally have time to get all these small tasks done during the times I would be waking down to the cafeteria to get a coffee or taking a stroll around the skyway, etc.

I get less done if I'm in the office, and if I'm WFH I can get some small chores knocked out during my downtime.

But Bill Brown is lonely so he wants us back in the office, even though he isn't there himself.

We get rollover vacation days?

On another note Right now on thursdays im averaging like 2 hours of real work. Go in early, be seen, hit the gym, be seen, long lunch with friends, be seen, leave by 3. Tip—On in person days have 1 important meeting, be seen, stop by peoples desks for an invented topic so they see you, then enjoy a lax day!!! Hybrid is more chill than wfh!!

Can someone explain to me why people give a sh-t about what they do for work?

Advancing your career? Goals? Fulfillment?

No one, and I mean no one at your funeral is going to say, "Jim was a he-l of an employee at 3M". "He was an amazing visionary and excellent VP." People will miss you, the actual you. Not the work you. The work you will be replaced.

Don't let work define you. Plus, isn't doing little to no work and getting ridiculous amounts of money the whole point of capitalism? If this is you, you won.

The internet doesn’t have enough space for all the reasons to quit 3M.

If all you want to do is slack and you have no ambition, sure, 3M is alright.

If you want more out of your job, 3M doesn't do it.

I'm stuck doing this for 40 hours a week, but for 30 of those hours I feel like a hamster on a wheel, because there's no clear goal I'm working towards and no opportunity to advance my career.

I'm smart, capable, I work hard when there's something to accomplish. I make $200k, so I don't feel like it's unfair of them to ask me to do some things. But I'm wasted on 3M, because I'm spending most of my time doing administrative busywork.
