Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Hot Desking or Hoteling

Dell’s decision not to provide dedicated desks is driven by two key factors:

  1. Cost Efficiency

Hot desking reduces the need for extensive office space, leading to significant cost savings. By optimizing workspace usage, companies can allocate resources more effectively.

  1. Enhanced Flexibility for Hybrid Work

As employees split their time between home and the office, hot desking allows for a more adaptable workspace. This model supports collaboration while giving employees the freedom to work remotely when it suits them best.

While this approach aligns with hybrid work principles, my primary concerns remain: cleanliness, available space, and the fact that employees are not given a choice in the matter. A more flexible system that accommodates individual preferences could improve the experience for everyone.

More companies are ditching hot desking for giving workers their own space. Why does it feel like we are getting the squeeze on this one?

What is this smell in the air you speak off? Did a coworker break wind? Is it the microwaved pot pies?

All of my colleagues keep talking my ear off, too much chatter and smell in the air to be productive.

I can’t even get my own headset as we lost our admin in layoffs. We’re just fighting for desks hoping for the best and trying to wear t-shirts to work if we can clock in on time.

Lots of food and coffee stains. Trash left behind. Personal belongings. I like the idea of hot docking, but for the love of Pete could we please do a better job cleaning the joint?

Some orgs are assigning desks over the course of Q1. D-mb to not have assigned space if everyone has to be there every day.

I say assign desks and leave collab space open for collaborating, field employees, and anyone traveling.

I was informed the other day that I was sitting in a row of “claimed” cubes. Mind you I was the only one in the row! All I could think of was Mean Girls. “On Wednesdays we wear Pink”.

"bring your own paper and pens"

Bring your own keyboard too, unless you are content with the dollar store ones Dell supplies that are basically guaranteed to cause carpal tunnel syndrome.

I’m envisioning folks sitting in hallways lined up like the old school disaster drills in school.

I don’t know where the OP works, but if everyone assigned to an office has to be there for eight hours a day five days a week then how in the world will ‘hoteling’ work if there aren’t enough desks to go around?

Bring your own headsets.
