After working hard for 14 years at this company, I was promoted from a 28 to a 29. I started as a 27. Rated a 5, got a great bonus, stock, and increase in pay. I've had years where I got a 3 and barely a raise and I know it's hard. I remember walking out of one review barely able to contain my tears. The changes I've made in my outlook here have really helped me to succeed more. I maintain my personal boundaries. I advocate and tell anyone who will listen about the work my team is doing. I am not above any work that is given to me. I learned working smarter, not harder, is the key. My heart is with anyone who had a rough review, I am living proof that things can get better. God bless you all ❤️

Congratulations! @OP+1jmmg8pen
I see no shame in offering hope to others by sharing your success.
Each of us could use real help saving our jobs…so you post could carry more heft if you’d share solid examples of working smarter not harder in this company, particularly if that worked for your benefit.
I think you’re not reading the room Totally missed the point of this forum. For whatever reason they promoted you and that’s great but expect more work and when you can’t deliver they will get trod of you.
This isn't Facebook
What’s your advice for working smarter and not harder as mentioned in your original post?
OP here, feel bad for this post now after people's comments, I don't want to flaunt anything or anything like that. I was depressed for many years thinking I'd never be promoted and laid off, and I know that's certainly a possibility still for me. I was more posting to give other people hope who were going through what I was, that's all.
Grade level 29 here, who has been told for over 5 years that I would be my “soon” to be retiring leader’s successors. Kudos for your move up. Shame on you for flaunting that here. Second, WE 29’s are in DIRECT line of fire for layoffs so I wouldn’t be bragging. The restricted stock is a carrot to get you to stay and work hard while they give you cr-p merit and RRP. You have to stay for 4 to 5 years to be vested in the stock. If they lay you off, and you aren’t 55 yrs of age or higher, you can kiss the stock goodbye. This company does not really care about your growth. If someone overseas can do your job for a quarter to the dollar that they pay you, your job will be eliminated. Please do all of us a favor and stay off this page if you’re only a spy planted here by the ORG to try and make it seem like United cares. They do not. If they did, my elderly leader, who should have retired long ago, who continues to create a hostile work environment, abuses their employees and does zero work, would be gone after multiple HR reports but they are still here because they are a “protected class”.
Honestly, you are disrespectful for posting this on a layoff forum. I hope the worst in your career and I hope you get laid off.
I went from a 25 to a 29 in 15 years. Within 10 months of making 29 I was laid off.
This is a layoff forum. It is not the place to discuss promotions, as that is disrespectful to those losing their livelihoods.
I have gone from gl 23 to gl 28 in 11 years so I am expecting to get a ed before ever getting the opportunity to move to 29.
I think you’re a troll.
No one cares. Now enjoy your cr-ppy job with your minimal bonus and increase while sc--wing over patients.
Great reviews and a positive attitude aren’t necessarily a promise of a promotion or a job guarantee. Congratulations on your promotion but be cautious. I was consistently rated a 5, was promoted organically to a 30, had great annual member surveys with my team, and was still laid off despite my great reviews, positive attitude and performance. Everyone is replaceable within the company.
OP here- Unfortunately, I did apply many places (hundreds, at least 3 per week) internally and externally in those 14 years, without luck finding a job for my skill set at my same salary. I do not have a bachelor's degree and worked my way up as a single working mother from the admin assistant level.
21 to 32 in what time frame? That is wild
Nice to hear a positive story on this board. Congrats!!!....
I made it from 21 to 32 organically. Just hard work and networking while not being a di-k.
Congrats OP!
What is this "stock" that you speak of? Are RSUs common here? Hired in as a 29 and the topic has never come up.
14 years to go up 2 levels. Hard pass
I am a grade 30. The jump from 28 to 29 is difficult. The jump from 29 to 30 will not happen in your area. Your only chance to level up further is to job post out in the company or elsewhere. If you are a 30, forget going to a 31 unless you are extensively connected to an executive or leave the company.
Thinking we will hear a different story from this person before the end of the year when they get laid off. Grades 29 and up make most of the layoffs unfortunately
I don’t know if this is sarcasm or not but in case it’s not, 14 years to go from 27 to 29 is a crazy long time. You would be absolutely shocked at the earning potential you would have had moving to a different company. I’m glad you were finally recognized for your hard work but you worked hard for the wrong company. I am sorry.
