Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Not enough seats in ireland

Apparently there simply is not enough seats to seat everyone in Ireland. Management are now letting people know that it’s ok to come in 2 or 3 times a week because the seats just aren’t there.

Some solutions that have been put forward are

  • Timeshare desks. One employee comes in 2 days the other comes in 3 days
  • Share desks. 2 employees will share a desk
  • have some people continue to work from home

This is surely an incredible embarrassment for the management team. Imagine potentially looking at dell as your future career prospect and being told you will need to be in 5 days a week and oh yeah, you need to share a desk with someone you don’t know

How in the name of god did they not know this before Michael’s knee je-k email

No idea where everyone will go in Cherrywood. One building long gone to other tenants and the 2nd floor given over to DFS. The Dell carpark at the back of the biz park is gone as well. I've often come in to find no free desk in my "neighbourhood" so end up sitting with people in other teams. We want you back 5 days but god forbid we make it comfortable.

I will not be attending the Cork site until there are enough desks for everyone, if that gets me fired then so be it

"It's time to play musical chairs, the lad without the seat gets sent packing."

I visited a customer site (during my time with EMC). All their technical staff were seated at long tables (think school cafeteria style ). The staff were literally bumping elbows when they typed. Many of the seats had faulty wheels or ripped upholstery. The worst thing about this is that there was at least one seat missing from each table. I you had to leave your place for any reason, the chances were that your seat would be gone when you got back (or maybe exchanged for a faulty one). Is this the future for Dell offices? Picnic benches anyone?

Bring your own desk and chair you lazy fu-k! What do you think we do here, pay for your comfort? You’re lucky you have a job. Now shut the fu-k up and sell some fu--ing computers for fu--s sake.

Solution is bunk desks, 3 stories ones. You come in early and sit on top, spitting on losers beneath....

They don't know or care about the lack of searing in Ireland. Ireland is not an area of investment going forward so with natural attrition and no hiring, the numbers will come down organically

"Support are in 5 days in cork "

Genuinely curious as to where they are going to put everyone given the fact they only refurbished one floor in CB2 and closed the others

Decisions being made by people whose offices are larger than most people’s homes.

No assigned seating, no raise to accommodate for commute, and not enough space. This place is a joke.

Is it 2 people per toilet too? Sounds like a Foxxcon model.

Dell should have used a computer to calculate the head count vs. the number of chairs. Dell could maybe buy a computer from SuperMicro to get that job done.

That is exactly it. It was a knee je-k reaction based on feelings rather than data. Just like most of the decisions made by any of the c-suite crowd. The ship has no compas, no rudder and no captain. We are just expected to keep rowing.
