Hey everyone, Someone I know recently shared that when they gave their two weeks’ notice, they weren’t able to get their PTO paid out. After looking into it, I found out this is actually true in many cases. Here’s what you need to know:
• In many states, companies aren’t required to pay out unused PTO when you leave.
• Some states DO NOT have employee protections for PTO payouts, so employers can legally keep it.
• If you give notice, some companies won’t let you use PTO during the notice period and might even make it unpaid time off.
What’s the best move? Use up your PTO before resigning to make sure you don’t lose it.
Also, does anyone know if major layoffs are expected in October? With all the talk about workforce reductions this year, it’s worth staying informed. Let’s share any updates we hear!

Move to California. They have to pay your PTO.
PTO by default is a grant not accrued. By default most states have no laws on the books to protect PTO. There are a couple states that have special laws MN is not one of them. So if you look on SPARQ after searching for PTO you will find all the state specific rules. As for more hunger games rounds there are 3 qtrs left so at a minimum there will be 3 more layoff rounds most likely more. This happens every year and will never change. Rule of thumb if you cannot roll PTO from year to year its gone if you terminated. So dont let PTO balance go over 40 hours ever. If you give notice expect to be gone that day.
October? I’m sure there will be more before then?
This is not new info. This company has never paid out PTO when you resign. Exception is purchased PTO.
