Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Is it a matter of Shame that GM is robbing employees of PFL?

I have been reading on Redditt that some people who have been let gone have been robbed for their Paid Parental/Family Leave? Isn’t this a matter of shame as a company? We are asked to display GM behaviors of 15 types but this company isn’t showing 1 humane behavior. They hv paid some people zero bonus, stolen PFL, stolen their remaining vacation days, stolen GM achievers points. I mean are we going to be monsters now since we did not like their performance? or because certain people complained about these people in feedback? What does GM intend to do with such money? We are becoming MONSTERS! Such a shame to work for this company. They are taking advantage of weak people in tough times.

There is a huge flaw in your reasoning. First you say, “GM is robbing employees of PFL”. Then you say “people who were let go were robbed of their PFL.” Unfortunately, people who are let go from a company are not employees.

Protection from Retaliation (If you can prove it, it's actionable.)

The FMLA prohibits employers from interfering with, restraining, or denying the exercise of, or the attempt to exercise, any FMLA right. Any violations of the FMLA or the FMLA regulations constitute interfering with, restraining or denying the exercise of rights provided by the FMLA. Examples include refusing to authorize FMLA leave or discouraging an employee from using FMLA leave. For more information about prohibited employer retaliation under the FMLA, see Fact Sheet #77B and Field Assistance Bulletin No. 2022-2.

Example:

When Ethan requests two weeks of FMLA leave to bond with his newborn baby, his supervisor denies the request and tells him that FMLA leave is only for women. Ethan files a complaint with the Wage and Hour Division who contacts his employer, secures the leave for Ethan, and ensures the employer understands the FMLA protections going forward.

After you are fired, GM isn't going to pay you for a family leave you were going to take in the future. That is about the most ridiculous thing I have heard in years!
The entitlement is comedy material.
"humane behavior" LMAO!!! WOW...
So if I think I'm going to get fired, why not just quickly do a Hail Mary pass and do a family leave for some extra cash! ha ha ha You can't make this up. Going to be rough ride for you people.

Big picture:

  1. Why is GM so threatened? Simple answer: Globally automotive companies are threatened by lower sales, high interest rates, new Chinese competition. Complex answer: Mary Barra promised 20+ new EV cars by 2023(?) and didn't deliver. SLT discovered that they lose tens of thousands of dollars with each EV sold. Didn't they do the research? They are now blaming us for not delivering with the software & hardware.
  2. In a performance environment, the work is scrutinized. If you aren't showing up, whether it's a medical or family leave or working remote, you have no performance to measure. Management simply sees these people as not contributing. Goodbye!
  3. There's an entitlement epidemic among American white collar workers. So much hand-wringing from people that do so little and demand so much! Do you think management isn't frustrated? People have gone from complaining about returning to work to now complaining that they didn't get paid for vacation and family leave after they are fired. Do you get it yet? Workers have no leverage. If you aren't cutting it, you get cut. Family leave, calling in, WFH on the drop of a dime... you will be singled out.
  4. The job market is not as advertised. Ghost jobs. H1Bs. AI that codes, does accounting and writes marking plans. Outsourcing. Companies disappearing and shrinking. It's different this time. Are you upping your game or crying? People on the outside of corporate america looking in are going to find out how f'ing hard it is to find a job that came close to the one they used to complain about.
  5. The big changes at corporations like GM are extreme belt tightening. Right now your manager is tasked with finding ways to save costs and there's a lot of pressure on him/her. They are measuring, analyzing, taking a deep look at you and your performance. If you think you can play games or phone it in, you are part of the cut.

Lots of reality checks for everyone.
The final shoe drop will be AI that babysits us with 1/16 the managers. Do the managers think that far ahead? AI can count heads and answer questions. LMAO!!!

It is for sure true!! I was let go for “poor performance” and still had 9 weeks left of my 12 weeks allowed for Paid Family Leave and lost all of it. I even asked about it.

The HR from Montana is deplorable. I’ve seen them trying to clear out folks with disabilities or disability accommodations. It’s just disgusting. Imo this stacked ranking is showing the true colors of the SLT

It is embarrassing if that is truth. They want to rob their own ex-family members (GM family?) of their Parental leaves and give it to top management since I guess they all exceeded and got 150% bonus. Mary being a mother herself should be reconsidering this.
