Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

Culture defining moment webcast

Are they serious? That should have been an email. Very wasteful use of time after months of buildup on what this was going to be. I looked around at my colleagues and all of us were like “aren’t we already doing these things?”
It was pretty ambiguous and I’m still confused how impending the word “hospitality” is going to turn the business around but ok.

Literally all forgotten.
No one cares enough to implement this. Be honest, every veteran is hoping their store closes.

Every. Single. One.

Another vague program being thrown at the wall to see if it will stick.

Your manager will soon start to ask you when and where you will be going on vacation (PTO) this year.

@14q+1jm0pprt5 I quickly looked at the PeopleLeader guide. Much of what I saw was how your manager can 'get to know you' by asking questions/creating conversation. Such as what did u do this weekend, etc.
Honestly, if you don't mean it, don't ask me. My manager and I have a good relationship and we know stuff abt each other. How that's going to help drive sales...🤷‍♀️

I'm still confused what is changing about the culture. I get the vision they have, but they never mentioned how the company gets there.

There's a lot of examples of great companies that have a hospitality focused culture, but a lot goes into getting to that point, and a lot has to do with the culture of how employees are treated.

After the webcast it just seemed like all that changed was a tagline and they thought that would be enough to excite the entire company and cause a culture change?

Macy's really is full of bitter old sales colleagues who do nothing but whine and complain. Better customer service ("hospitality") isn't a bad thing!

Talk about a tone deaf CEO. We all sat in stunned silence while Tony described his confusing example of a great hospitality experience at a restaurant where the bread order was $18. Does he realize how difficult it is to just buy groceries at Walmart or Aldi for our families based on our manager salaries? Who talks about his disappointment about not choosing to order bread when he saw it delivered to another table and doesn't even recognize that most of the people watching could never afford to consider eating at the kind of restaurant where he received such great service.

You know what would have been a more relatable example, if he described great hospitality experience that he received at a visit to Taco Bell, or maybe Burger King. The people working at these fast food places are making closer to the what Macy's employees earn and we draw from a similar labor pool. Wait staff working at a restaurant that charges $18 for an order of bread likely make more than most managers at our stores. If you want the same level of hospitality in our stores, perhaps you should consider raising pay and improving benefits so we can attract and retain the same caliber of people as the restaurant he visited.

The middle managers need to be hospitable towards their employees and show support before any employees can show that to the customers

I guarantee Karen in the thread is just another Potbellied wanna be executive. Probably over a dying store...and dishing out that fake Macys attitude because they lack any marketable skills. Any fool with a lick of intelligence can see this brand needs more than soundbites. That Hobbit of a CEO...isnt done yet.

Trust me.

If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times, stop having " planned visits"! Corporate / Regional/ District need to just walk into stores and see what the customer sees. More sales colleagues, more management at store level. Listen, I get it, you need sales colleagues to make sales, but you need sales to get more colleagues. Stores that are not F50 or N75 are left to rot! How many times do you go to a store and completely re do their entire building for a visit! For smoke & mirrors

I shop at Macy’s, and thanks to you, I see why the company is struggling. You called someone like me—a Macy’s shopper—a dum--ss. That’s fine because the next time a customer comes in, you’ll be the one forced to give great service with a smile while they look at you with pity. I realize you’re bitter, probably because you’re worried about getting fired soon and having to drink sugar water since you won’t be able to afford Kool-Aid. I can’t wait to see you either forced to deliver genuine hospitality or get fired. Bye.

“It is clear that your CEO is trying. Stop complaining or join his efforts or move on from your company. It is that simple.”

Ok kool-aid drinker. Stay drunk on the kool-aid. If you don’t even work for the company then STFU about things you know nothing about. Dum--ss

"Its clear that your CEO is trying".

Toxic Optimism.

That wasnt "trying" you fool. Macys needs more than an Attitude adjustment. It needs People that have a real vision and can articulate the expectations. It needs Sales staff, more ownership and less people to flip pieces of paper every sale.

And furthermore...that response wasnt very "Hospitable".

Word salad. They made me partake in utter word salad. Nothing tangible, just yipping like feral Chihuahua's. Bring back Federated mindset it's when it was the best.

What was triggering in my store was when my coworker started crying when he pulled out that coin. She said it reminded her of being in AA (Alcoholic Anonymous)… it was a very uncomfortable situation to be in.

I was VERY surprised when they were talking about Parade of Deals and how all the departments worked together on it. You mean to tell me that was NEW?? That's cr-p. Merchants, web, marketing....they all have to work together to make a promotion work. There's no way that they didn't do this before. I worked at a much smaller but very well known retailer and we did this years ago.
