Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

I stay because I like it here

Since this gets asked over and over again, let me respond like this. I stay because I've got great colleagues and flexible hours. I stay because I am a people person and despite some exceptions, most of the customers are okay. I stay because the pay is decent. I've worked for much less at much worse places. That's why I stay. People need to realize that their bad experiences are not universal. I come to this forum not to complain but to make sure there are no layoffs or closings. That's it. Some of us like this place, as shocking as it can be to some of you.

ISM should have been completed many years ago. Most organizations have a one stop shop tope of employee. Macy*s waited to long and kept old concepts alive. Now the pain of change is even stronger than it would have been earlier in the stores.

Macys is not the same company it was a year ago. The entire ISM rollout, the TRU concept and decisions made on a daily basis that make zero sense have destroyed what was once a solid foundation of core values and a company you used to be proud to work for.

Also they just figured out making jobs variable so they don’t have to pay PTO or benefits was the wrong decision so now they are trying to course correct, unfortunately for them they waited till long to bring back FT jobs with benefits and PTO, people moved on.

And those in variable jobs want the 25 or so hours. They don’t want 40 or more and not interested in the benefits piece. This is at my location anyways.

They have a a lot of problems right now including lack of staff, tenured red badges in store and senior executives leaving (look at Linkdin), and merchandise coming out the doors because private brand is not selling.

It’s all coming to a boiling point

I worked for Macys for over 18 years until Tech was downsized over 3 years ago. Much better working for Tech than in the stores but I did work with a lot of great people. This company changed a lot over 6 years ago and have been downsizing ever since. After that most of us were still doing our job but there was much more scrutiny as to what we were doing and micro managing. Still get to work with some good people as a vendor now but I can see and feel the tensions in these stores I agree with the person who posted about grocery stores yes that can be worse as well as some other retailers as well as convenience places that “require” you to work weekends and Holidays. It’s really an individual basis as to how your experience has been not everyone likes it and or believes they can do better.

I started as a seasonal worker and remained with the company for 40 years. Through the bad times of the company bankruptcy and many other economy related challenges. You do have opportunities for advancement and a more generous pay increase if you challenge yourself and look for opportunities. It is called "working your way up the ladder". The instant high pay for gracing the company with your presence is not going to happen. Roll up your shirt sleeves. Wipe your nose and contribute to your own success.

Gosh yall are so hostile for no reason. The OP didn't bash anybody. He just presented a different perspective. I hate my life at Macy's and yet there are moments in which I'm quite happy because I'm with people I like and we're overcoming challenges together. Maybe the OP needs something low-key for their current life circumstances. No reason to be mean. And trust me I'm one of the most negative people around, and have even been spoken to about my negativity. But I won't po-p on someone making the best of things.

I like a lot of my coworkers also. You must either have NOT worked at Macy’s for a long time (wait a 1-2 years), are one of the executives favorites who always gets favors with scheduling and the like, or an executive yourself. Cuz you gotta be joking about the pay being decent. I live in a big city and many, many other retailers are paying more than Macy’s. Even Macy’s knows this and that is why they are paying the seasonal colleagues more than their regular colleagues as to keep up with the competition. Nobody wants to work for $15 an hour when others are paying up to $17-18 starting pay and when everything is so expensive. Lay off the kool aid.
