How is stacking ranking not a HR nightmare?

I’m confused how leaders who are being told to use stack ranking (meaning some people will be assigned a 2 that aren’t actually a 2) for their year end review. I just feel like if that’s the case, everyone who has had that happen should go to HR and file a complaint. That’s a super barbaric way to practice leadership and honestly makes no sense. Why not give everyone what they actually earned?

Stack Ranking is so short sighted. If you hire good managers who do their job then by the end of the year "2s" have either been corrected or eliminated. Being forced to rank 2s only motivates managers to hold onto cr-ppy employees. This brings down the morale for EVERYONE. It's a sh---y system that cr-ppy companies used instead of hiring decent managers.

If only they stack ranked the leadership instead of granting them a base salary we can only dream of and then free stock options to top it off…. Then you’d see things change in a heartbeat. But no limits on those funds, are there?

Only so much money in the bucket for dispersement. This strategy is as old as time nothing new all the large corporations do it. HR is not you friend they exist for the company only. As a worker bee you dont have any leverage in this situation.

I mean, look at what is happening in our political environment today. Folks are totally going against thier morals and ethics and everything they stood for, out of fear that they will loose thier jobs or livelihood. I have seen well seasoned professional turn total hypocrites because they are so scared of the new President. When you have highly visible government officials, celebrities, house memebers totally get bullied and expect corporate leaders to be super heros? I do not like this current climate at all but if you want to see positive change you have to do the work yourself and support others who do it.

It’s a terrible system on the small scale because you can be on a high performing team but because we are required to stack our team, a 2 or 3 on our team could be higher performing than a 4-5 on a low performing team. It is messed up.

Bc HR team is also threatened by being stack ranked itself. No psychological safety or support from leadership in a weak job market means that all people practices serve the almighty dollar.
