Seriously. Putting up sh---y numbers saves nobody. Going down that path, everyone loses their job genius. Because the company loses the ability to compete, death spirals, and then it teaches you what a good leader actually means.
My manager fits in the "do nothing all day," earn a lot, fly under the radar until retirement while having done almost absolutely nothing except befriend their bosses for half of their working life. Their reward? A generous 401k account, the "luxury" of upper middle class/lower upper class lifestyle, a permanent vacation while only checking in for a few minutes a day, and retire at the beach.
