Thread regarding 3M layoffs

SAP Implementation

How is SAP implementation going? Still using PeopleSoft too? Must be wasteful and costly to run multiple systems. Must be nearing the 10 year mark. Is there another new completion date? Who’s accountable for this debacle? Are leaders being measured against this failure?

If only we had a good CIDO….then we might actually fix something. Unfortunately he is just in it for himself…and does anything to take credit for others work and make himself look good. What has he actually accomplished….layoffs and mass talent exodus.

The other thing to note is that 3M never finishes what it starts. You could virtually look at any process that was started; we get just so far building out the process, then we're on to doing something else. I don't think SAP is much different. It's like we get bored because it can't be done or simply it's not bringing the returns that were promised.

BT was a train wreck long before the Canada disaster. Wasn't the Taiwan phase 1 roll out around 15 years ago? Weren't all legacy apps supposed to be gone by 2015?

There are companies that have rolled out SAP, correctly decided it su-ks rotten eggs, and transitioned away from SAP in the time 3M has been sc--wing around with it.

The people to blame are long gone, so there is not much to be done there. They made the decisions, watched Canada go up in smoke, and either retired/got fired/or sailed off into the sunset at that time.

SIBG is doing some type of "Legacy Integration" as they're calling it. You can catch the post on Viva Engage.

Speaking as someone very involved in the SAP implementations, I can share w/ you that what we currently have is highly customized, sadly. And there are key resources that only know how the specific logic works; hence, we're back to the days of dependencies on a few resources. SAP was sold to us by Ernie Parks as "one global solution", ease of implementation and up and running in no time. Highly dependent on consultants who ultimately ended up as "highly specialized" 3Mers.....got us nowhere.

Better question is: does 3M have the money for getting the new SAP? As I recall, what was rolled out was customized so much that a straightforward upgrade is no longer possible, and yes, what they rolled out has EOL in 2 years. So the options are two: they will find the money (unlikely) or, just before EOL there will be a split into 3 or 4 separate companies, and these will manage it themselves. Nice!

My understanding is that the old version of SAP 3M is implementing is end of life in 2027. Was supposed to be 2025 but was pushed out.

One could easily work a full 30+ year career implementing SAP at 3M.

From when it started until it eventually gets fully rolled out at all plants and countries globally. Not to mention the future updates because the versions used on the initial implementations will no doubt be obsolete and no longer supported by SAP, so new versions must be rolled out.

Of course, BT is a miserable place to be for an extended period of time (ask me how I know...) so few would actually want to endure the meat grinder for more than a couple years anyway.

@ae+1jkpmaay4 post sounds like our current government. "Trust the process".. nothing to see here.. we're just making everything great again.. you don't need to be able to see any data and we don't want anyone who may have had any longer term expertise involved. We're here to make everyone march in line to the pied piper without questioning. "Trust the process" aka "Trust us without thinking or using your own brain".

The ones who got to enjoy is the BT deployment team. They got to travel around, free hotel stays plus meals. Some saved up a lot of money to travel.

User interface from the 90's. Wonder when this SAP version goes obsolete? Or maybe it has already....I suppose we just buy another multiyear life support package and pay $$$$ to keep the wheels on bus.
