The company often uses psychological tactics on employees they have targeted for layoffs. This process often begins with gaslighting, praising you as a high performer only to later deny they ever said it. They then move the goalposts, shifting expectations and providing unclear or contradictory feedback. Your accomplishments are undermined, either by downplaying your contributions or comparing you unfavorably to others to make you feel inadequate. To further weaken your position, they isolate and alienate you, excluding you from key decisions and blocking access to support. They may also withhold critical information, setting you up to fail and then blaming you for not meeting unknown expectations. By the time this process is complete, the company feels justified in letting you go or marking you for the next round of layoffs.
