So my situation is I live about 50k from the closest office (Limerick).. it normally takes me just over the hour anytime I go in. I'm still listed as remote in Workday so I don't know what my status will be.
I've worked through the logistics and I just can't do 5 days, no way with school kids etc. So if I'm told to RTO 5 days I'm just not going to comply.. my manger can deal with it. No more point worrying about it at this stage. It's only a job, and a cr-ppier and cr-ppier one of late.

only an hour, get used to it or get out
Google maps tells me my commute is 47 minutes. I wish
"You conveniently forget that it's not just "few hours", RTO policy says nothing about it. Instead, it presumes that you're expected to spend full working hours in the office."
Yep. I was explicitly told that my team would be expected to be in the office every day for at least 6 hours per day.
"OP , your commute isn't that far. Why can't you drop your kids to school, go to office for a few hours and leave early to pick them up again and wfh after"

"HR are just going to use Google maps to see how long your commute is, maybe they will add in 10 mins for traffic or something"
Yeah, I know at least 2 colleagues living in Dublin and not having a car, it takes them 1.5h to get to the office by public transport. Does it mean they are mandated now to take driving lessons, get driving license and buy a car asap?
Google maps also have an option to show time it takes to get to your destination by car, public transport and on foot. Do you mean HR will be doing individual level assessments then?
OP sounds like the kind of guy that Dell should be getting rid of
Can't go to office due to kids is not a reason. Make arrangements like everyone else

Saying you can't RTO cos of school is ridiculous
I submitted a HR ticket to see if I could get an answer on how they are determining who has to go into the office. We'll see if they respond. (I'm not holding my breath.)
"If your commute is over an hour then you should be able to stay remote"
What is not clear is one hour by what? Car, public transport if you don't have a car, cycle, on foot?
If your commute is over an hour then you should be able to stay remote
"any employee has the right to ask for working remotely. "
That law isnt worth Jack!
All the employer has to show is that they gave your request reasonable consideration.
Just tell them you sold your car due to personal circumstances. That will save your remote status. Also, in Ireland, by law, any employee has the right to ask for working remotely.
"Employers should ensure their reasons for termination are fair, objective, and reasonable."
Does distance from site constitute object reason to terminate Remote Working?
It's also unrealistic for you not to know your work status Remote or Not until late Feb and be expected to RTO 3rd March. Legally your entitled to 4 weeks notice, which isn't that long considering most people are remote since covid.
