Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Government employees

Although I don’t like to see people get laid off the federal government workers are finally experiencing what we in the private sector have experienced. That is the threat of losing your job and possibly being given a choice to either leave voluntarily or get fired. Why should the federal employees have guaranteed employment even if they do a good job. We don’t.

Not sure why this topic is under Oxy -- but since you opened it up, let's have some fun.

@hd+1jkhpg8wd - not sure what your experience with the federal government is. I'm not sure that federal employees only make up 4% of the federal budget costs, but what you seem to miss is that many of these federal dollar give-aways are driven by these federal employees. These federal employees often believe they are "better" than you or me and therefore, can work to impose their own personal political preferences into the bureaucracy. Give the oligarchs the boot - help to remove the other problems as well.

No one can significantly cut the federal budget simply by cutting the number of employees. That much is correct. But if you can cut the other 96%, say by 10% to use a nice round number, can you cut the number of employees proportionally?

I think that after all the court challenges are played out and the theatrics in the legislative branch come to an end, this is going to get done. The only question is, can it last past the end of this administration into the next, and the one after that… There is no use in debating that now. Time will tell.

Federal employee payroll represents 4% of the overall budget. Good to see DOGE targeting those spending categories that are definitely going to make a difference in the federal budget. Maybe they'll get it down to 3.9%? Break out the champagne and caviar!

Those payments were crazy, but at least they were not paid from your and my tax dollars which the government took on threat of fine or imprisonment if we did not hand them over. There’s a big difference between corporations wasting their money and the government wasting our money. And yes, I know that we all need petroleum products. However, if you decided tomorrow that you weren’t going to buy any more, Oxy could not come to your house and arrest you.

$300 million dollars paid out to APC senior executives, $1 billion dollars paid to Chevron, $48 billion dollar APC acquisition ..$12 billion for CR.....One should look hard in the mirror before taking the moral high ground.

It is good that they feel the pain just like the private sector. The amount of our tax dollars wasted by the govt is out of control. Like any other business cutting cost is one of the first things to do to survive.

OP, at Oxy only the bad technical people and managers stay, the excellent technical people leave on their own or are shown the door. Many examples over the years.
