Superintendent of Duluth Public Schools, John Magas, said there is often confusion about the difference between displacements and layoffs.
“Right now, we’ve notified people who are being displaced. It’s not the same as layoff. What it means is the person is contractually disconnected from the position that they currently have,” Magas said. “It doesn’t mean that they’re laid off, it means that hypothetically by the time summer rolls around, if there isn’t a new position for that person, or if there isn’t a retirement or funding hasn’t increased, there could be layoffs.”
Displacements will impact 41 positions within the district.
