Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

The BS of Michael Dell

Dell CEO says he’s ‘retiring’ hybrid work, claiming that email exchanges waste time: ‘For all the technology in the world, nothing is faster than the speed of human interaction’

Shouldn't this hypocrite then remove Dell offices from all over the world where he gets things done for cheap labor. I know lot of time is wasted on meetings and emails and IMs by coordinating with Dell folks in Taiwan, India and other cheaper labor countries.

The BS of Michael Dell is appalling but not surprising. Glad that I jumped ship in August of last year to get a 33% base pay hike, 500K of stocks and remote work in a nice company.

Michael Dell is a POS. Having said that I just bought an Alienware PC, my bad.
He wants to be like Larry E and Hock.
Bottom line he would SC--W his own mother for a dime. He helped destroy VMW.
Basically he can kiss my A-S.

Companies that hold long-term leases or own office spaces have a vested interest in maximizing their use. Empty offices represent sunk costs, and bringing employees back can help justify these expenses. Additionally, the value of commercial real estate is influenced by occupancy rates, so widespread remote work threatens property values and investment returns. While productivity, collaboration, and company culture are often cited as primary drivers, the financial implications of real estate is the real underlying factor. I guess we have to look beyond ourselves and do what is best for our situation. I hate to say this, but the contract of employment goes both ways. So if you’re not happy it’s time to jump ship. Trust me, I’m on your side and believe that companies should look to a shared solution that meets in the middle. I’m just trying to make sense of the reasoning on why billionaires are now dictating how and where we work.

RTO is a step in company strategy to get headcount down due to anticipated productivity increase from AI in the future. Headcount reduction without overhead of severance packages is multi-year strategy of the leadership. RTO is a first tactical step toward this goal.

I think people need to look at what the further of their career is and how AI will impact it, this is the real reason for layoffs or people cuts and will continue. It happening at all technology companies. The tools you can use with ai and become the leader in using them , the people who learn to adopt, will survive one place or another. Before networking it took an army of people in the office to move data around. Back in the 1800 there were lamp lighter before electricity. forest for the trees. Look at the big picture.

Yes - RTO is a disguised form of layoff that benefits MD. He doesn't have to pay severance. He is crafty and an astute businessman that only cares about money and not people.

Guys, you know it's a moot point to call MD out on his bullsh-t and try to prove him wrong. He's a clown for sure, but he's not d-mb: RTO is a deliberate move on his part to force attrition without paying severance. As much as I hate to admit it myself, that's the hard truth and no amount of wailing on forums will change that.

His excuses are just random pickings from the excuses chapter in his "Leading for Dummies" book.
Can email conversations take longer? Yes, but face to face conversations leave no paper trail and no record of what was said, one reason that we have 'minutes' written and emailled following a meeting. No form of communication is perfect.
I for one will be indulging in multiple 30 second meetings in the café, if my productivity of actual measurable work suffers then so be it. Head grifter said so...

Is it not a waste of time to commute to and from the office after badging in for 3 to 4 hours only to appease the swipe gods? Are teams losing valuable time to in-person meetings now? Are you spending more time in frustration commuting in traffic? How is the culture and collaboration in the office going? Are you still required to share a desk with multiple colleagues?
