Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Grow Up!

I joined Dell 6 years ago, post EMC acquisition, and was stunned by the wastefulness at the company, There were 10 people from 5 different teams all doing the same job - “enabling”, “supporting”, “assisting” etc. but trying to get one of them to own or drive something resulted in “not my job, it’s those other guys”.

Those of us delivering actual value to the company have zero worries. Personally, I’m not going to the office 5 days a week and never will. I’ve told my VP that I’ll never go to the office 5 days a week, so fire me if that’s an issue, and he fully supports my position as he knows the value I bring.

I appreciate that most people in a job believe they work hard and put in long hours but seriously it’s time to evaluate the actual value you deliver for an organisation.

Feel free to hate me for telling the truth……

Sir, this is RadioShack.

Awesome. I'm looking for a 30 uF capacitor. Any of those in stock?

Sounds like you have it all figured out and provide value to your VP. Sounds like you're driving the train and shouldering a lot of the business and can pick up more work and responsibilities as teams decrease. I know the VP is thinking at way.

Just another person who can’t think beyond surface level. Institutionalized mindset. Indoctrinated with capitalism and thinks that anyone cares about them or their work. You could be replaced or cut any day regardless of the “value” you bring.

B _ _ _ h please! You just told your Vp you ain’t comin in? You’re just a number like everyone else. Don't come on here preaching your next level work ethic. Those who have to brag about their value to the company need to be shown the door. I can think of one good place to trim the fat right now.

Huh? Dell salaries are high-end compared to other top companies? I know plenty of people that get paid more at B & C tier companies. If we are talking about tech, FAANG interns get paid more than most of my coworkers.

Losing skilled employees doesn’t invalidate the original post?

Expertise deployed incorrectly is still bad business. I’d wager that the management and remaining team members referenced are still trying to do the things they’ve always done - with a smaller team?

The author of the original post is wrong.
Several extremely valuable employees in the US were let go. They were experts in their fields of operating systems, support, and project management.

Their managers are still scrambling and ex-colleagues are stretched trying to cover for them.

That doesn’t really justify a response as it’s just a bizarre and illogical comment.

If I’m all on board for driving the simplification and reduction of overlapping roles - how am I causing the problem?

Your the reason why there are "There were 10 people from 5 different teams all doing the same job" -- it's only a matter of time before you leave, on your own, or the "other" way.

"Dell pays me an awesome salary"

LoL. You dont even know what you dont even know.
Keep thinking you get paid "awesome" at dell.

Because Dell pays me an awesome salary to work hard and be good at what I do?

I’m failing to see the “giant hole” you allude to?

There is a big giant hole in your declarations.
If you are so awesome, why would you stay at Dell?

Dell is working at a hive mind. You are only as good as how much you subscribe to their "values."

Yup, I’m a number, replaceable and happy with my lot in life - welcome to reality! If Dell no longer wants me, I’ll happily shake hands and go ply my trade elsewhere.

I fully support remote work and unless HR holds everyone accountable almost every manager I know at almost every level will support remote work.

The only hypocrite in the company is the person running it. He’s the disease and it’s spreading across his company.

The whole point of “Anonymous” is not to name / shame individuals but my conversations were with a US VP.

I stand by my original post….

Would love to know the name of the VP that supports this declaration! If management are genuinely being given the ability/flexibility to "manage" their own teams and therefore decide who actually "needs" to be on site and those that don't then this will be a welcome step in comparrison to the one size fits all approach we often see from the "higher ups". Knowing Dell, I doubt this will be the case.
