Not sure if I believe in the OP. Why would they accept the supervisor’s resignation rather than lay you off? Your direct manager has very little input as to whether or not you get laid off. Those decisions are made higher up.
Also, when did GM start using the term “supervisor”?
Will his sacrifice actually save your job?
Do you have that promise from someone high up who can keep it?
Or will you both go?
