Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Is promotion possible in 2025?

I-6 Software Engineer for approx 5 years now. Last two years I was assured of a promotion but instead got a moderate boost in raise percentage citing budget issues for a promotion.I've dodged every layoff because I was told I had great impact.

You think it's possible for me to get a promo this year? Did anyone see anyone climb higher during tough times?

Also what kind of boost can I expect IF I get the promo ? Can I negotiate ?

TC as of today : 110,000$
I'll be 5x RTO starting March as well.

I’ve backfilled a role that’s much higher than my grade, but now they’re saying that my promotion isn’t certain.

The more money you make, the bigger target on your back.

The comparison between Europe and US salaries is often made but don’t think it’s apples to apples given the vastly different social support structures in place for healthcare, education and retirement.

The only next viable promotion is your get WFRed, take severance and find a higher paid position elsewhere.

you wasted enough time at Dell. You would have been better off channeling your energy and efforts to another company/job and +20% increase by default.

I have no idea why you would pursue dell.
there is no there there.

Youre too far out of band, and your boss would have to not give anyone else an increase. Even with that, they can only jump your salary a certain amount. I7 lower band is 144k, so youd have to come within 10% of that at a minimum. 110->130k is not going to happen. This exact same sh-t happened to me, and this past year I moved to the OCTO org. We are hiring heads this year in the i6-i8 range, so work with your boss to move there. Youll "promote" to i7. What you need to work on your boss is RSU's, that will follow you to the new org......Or leave

Leave.

At your level you should be able to find a promo elsewhere fairly easily.

Dell isn't going to promote unless you luck out into backfilling a coworker's slot if they leave on their own choice.

I wouldn't hold your breath for a promotion within your department. You best bet is to look at other departments through the internal job board.

It will vary by team, but I am in a similar position and was told no budget again this year. That’s why the remote policy of no promos isn’t the downside they think it is - you can barely get promoted at Dell as is.
