It has come to my attention that some employees in the HP Amstelveen (Netherlands) office still haven’t received their severance pay package, even a month after their last working day. If you’re among the employees set to be laid off soon, here’s something important to keep in mind.
In the Netherlands, there’s a law called "Wettelijke rente" (statutory interest), which entitles you to interest for each day your severance payment is delayed.
What should you do?
Hire a good lawyer.
Have them write a formal letter to HP demanding prompt payment.
Typically, companies will push to include your severance in the next payroll cycle, but remember: you’re entitled to interest for each day your severance is delayed. Avoid taking the matter to court unless absolutely necessary, as it could result in a longer process and potentially a lower payout.
Act swiftly and ensure you get what you’re owed. This advice applies especially if you’re a Dutch employee at the Amstelveen office. Don’t leave money on the table!
