Thread regarding Optum layoffs

I envy younger employees

First, if they joined recently, their chances of being laid off are lower. They’re not as well-paid as those of us who’ve been here longer, and we all know pay is the main factor in layoffs.
Second, being young today means they can more easily find a new job. I’m 52. If I get laid off, I’m sc--wed.
I hope you all realize just how lucky you are.

This company will have fully offshored every position before I even reach your level of tenure.

The flip side to this is your 52 and should have more of a head start with experience, retirement, etc vs a 20something recent grad.

Uh ok? No one cares you are old and made your older. You were young once too. Maybe you should have saved some of that money you are so easily bragging about and planned your little life better.

How about that?

The job market is trash for every one of any age and any skills/ educational background. Let’s not fool ourselves or play “ I’m more a victim than you” it’ll be hard for anyone getting laid off.

I’m a younger employee and I can tell you the grass is always greener on the other side. Many in my generation won’t be able to afford a house with the low wages and low increases. Many want a career but can’t build one in America today because of places like UHG that make you guess when they will offshore you.

I have also applied for jobs and the market is extremely brutal towards newer applicants because of the volume of more qualified people applying.

I get it, jobs favor youth but it isn’t that much of a benefit right now. Everyone is struggling.

this doesn't apply to every young person and is just my experience here. ive been here 4 years, I've been laid off every year. Old manager faught to have me back the last three times. She was laid off last year. I make $16/hr. I am laid off. Yes I may have the advantage of not being a "risk" hire due to retirements any time soon, but at this company currently everything is moving offshore and not a damn thing anyone can say.

time to start speaking with your money and don't ever use optum services if you can help it.

Right, long tenure employees often make LESS, not more given merit increases over last 15 years. You have to get promoted once every 5 years just to keep up with inflation.

OP doesn't realize that this company still practically pays what it did when they joined despite the cost of living skyrocketing. Classic Gen X moment.

Yup feels really lucky to have extremely high mortgages or rent and daycare payments that we will now have no means of paying suddenly. Our expenses are a lot higher.

This su-ks for everybody, period.
