Performance Review

Had my performance review and was told I didn’t get receive a highly because the quota of WM’s were met? This is a new thing, only be at NM for 4 years, I’m in tech.

You are working with the wrong manager. Get out of this team or talk to your leader.

@ce+1jj5kn1sm I strongly disagree. I managed a team of engineers and a struggling BM was rated a 4 in spite of me giving a 2 which was overly generous. He had very low output in spite of a ton of training and 1x1 mentoring and he couldn’t cut it, a WM would’ve been terminated within 2 months but this guy got a 4 rating by my director, and with the quota of 4’s and 5’s it meant someone much more deserving was shafted.

As a recently retired manager that is a thing. I had a definite 5 in my team, he accomplished more than the next 3 engineers on the team combined. So I rated him a 5 again and was told by our director that he was a 5 last year and couldn’t be one this year. Despite my advocacy with the director and other managers he got a 3 and quit a month later for higher pay commensurate with his talents.. A big loss to NM due to clueless leadership.

Thanks for the info. Could you explain how this will affect the employee who was unable to attain?

There’s a quota of the number of 4s and 5s that you get as an org, but has nothing to do with race. Agree with the previous poster, more than likely your manager either didn’t fight for you hard enough or didn’t prep their manager to fight for you. Diversity is brought up, but it’s never been talked about in the way you mention. Sounds like your manager needs to grow a backbone and tell you that you didn’t do as good compared to your peers.

Idk if this is every org, but at least in mine they get every manager into a room and spend an hour debating over who gets the 4s and 5s and there is indeed a quota that you can't go over. If you didn't get a 4 or a 5 and you believe you should've then it means your manager didn't fight your case strongly enough against the other managers.
