Blackstone private equity sold out the motel six brand to an Indian company that is, this has been the subject of multiple lawsuits around corruption and treatment of employees in the US, Europe and in India. On the day they bought the Motel 6 parent company, they laid off more than half of staff (120+), after telling them they wouldn’t be making any changes for 30 days and that G6 would continue to be an independent company. Now the people who are left are reporting into the decision makers in India.

I hope that any remaining G6 employees join forces with those who were already given the boot. The collective voice will be the only way to force OYO leadership to follow their own damn policies, or at least give us the best opportunity to ensure we are all treated equally. They actively tried to take our bonuses by providing one group with one message while telling everyone else to eat rocks. This is theft. This is bad business practices. Enough voices were heard this week after yet another disappointing decision from disgraceful Ritesh Agarwal and his corrupt OYO team, and within 24 hours they had to own up to their mistakes. As much as you can expect from emboldened narcissists anyway. Just don't get too comfortable. They are still withholding 25% of your money and have set the groundwork already to blame Blackstone. We have to get louder.
I am a contractor who was involved with helping the team at G6 for a couple of years and then right up to this end. Everything I can see about this OYO crew is that they are clueless, reckless, truthless, and heartless. They terminated my contract and then only right before I walked out the door asked "Oh, what exactly were you doing here? Can you help us with understanding your system and how we can migrate data?" Yeah, no thanks. What I saw them do to the staff in those last days was absolutely the worst business behavior I have EVER seen - blatant lies, strong-arm tactics, irresponsible and reckless behavior, lack of basic knowledge, downright mean-spiritedness. Hey, Blackstone and a few select folks got paid though, so I guess that's all that counts apparently.
I am very sorry for the many good hard-working folks at G6 who had to suffer this.
i think this will all end up in tears and that they do not know what they are doing they are going into a new market that will chew them up and sp-t them out and on top of everything they are terminating the folks who know the business and deeply care things and good luck with whoever you bring from india ro whoever in india takes these tasks on it's so pathetic and bad
hey @d8 - i just dont think julie knew how things might play out - i am sure she had hints but i dont think she knew the whole story - it's so sad and stupid at the same time. also, they still lie, every day
These comments should be posted on the OYO Linked In page.
They never learned their lesson from when they first started OYO unlike our initial town hall with them where they stated they did. I wish I would have been smarter and got out sooner but was hopeful and stayed. I feel for the franchise owners and the support they are losing. Things will never be the same unfortunately. I do not wish OYO the best. And hopefully we are paid out our earned compensation and bonuses at a fair rate. The last town hall they didn’t want to speak to bonuses so I am sure they are thinking of ways to not pay them at all or at a very low percentage.
And now they realize they messed up and regret letting people go who knew everything about the company too soon. You’re On Your Own buddy!
it’s called throwing the baby out with the bathwater, they got rid of all of the employees who actually carried the company serviced the franchisees and made money for the motel 6 brand. Good luck OYO.
I disagree that our executives knew in advance. I think we all assumed there would be some layoffsover time, but I believe we were all shocked by over half the company being laid off within the first 48 hours.
OYO stands for On Your Own. Poetic, isn’t it?
At a town hall we had at G6 before the sell happened, a question was asked and it was “Will this new owner bring his own people and replace us?” And the former CEO Julie A. answered “No, because nobody knows the brand like we do”. That just shows they lied and they knew exactly what was going to happen.
Those who were let go immediately are grappling with large (negative) changes in support for terminated team members. Very little has been communicated, and it’s clear that OYO is unable to navigate US laws and business customs. They refuse to answer any questions, because they are playing it all by the seat of their pants. It’s clear they have no respect for the brand, for US business practices, and thereby no respect for their local patrons or owners. OYO will fail to uphold any remaining dignity with this kind of young, brash behavior.
Here is the background and what triggered it, they lied from the get go and had plans to replace the US based staff with Indian resources. Anyhow, the news about the acquisition are here:

Hmm I thought they promised franchise owners that the level of support they received would not change. I don’t see how that’s possible with half the people gone.
