Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Lets sum up the damage done by Pastor Pat

  1. Jan 2021: Joins earnings call before becoming CEO. Says something stupid. Stock tanks.
  2. Feb 2021: On Day 1, calls Apple a lifestyle company. Incredible arrogance.
  3. Feb 2021: Says AMD in rear-view mirror, starts scare-mongering about China/TSMC.
  4. Creates IFS : Should have created 1 Foundry org with one real leader. Instead he created 3 orgs each with utterly incompetent leaders.
  5. Hired DEI HR and Legal officers. Fired the old CFO and hired a yes-man DZ in his place.

5a. Hired retired deadweights to lead Design. Zero vision for the CPU, GPU or AI products.

  1. 2021: Began the insanity of 5N4Y. Utterly brain-dead idea devoid of any understanding of semiconductor development and foundry economics.
  2. 2021: Spent billions on raises, bonuses, retention grants.
  3. 2021: Bet the company on 18A - without understanding why TD had failed on 10/7nm.
  4. 2022 : Began a hiring spree like no other. WHY? Because COVID spending on CPUs would last forever.
  5. 2022 : Kept claiming 18A was doing great.
  6. 2022 : Began WILD Capex spend - Ohio, Germany, Ireland, Poland, Italy, France and so many other places to build factories without any plans to fill them.
  7. 2022 : Began lobbying for $$$ from Biden instead of actually running the company.
  8. 2023 : Claimed market was softening so cut everyone's pay.
  9. 2023 : 6 months later, claimed the "bottom was in" so restored pay. WHAT?
  10. 2023 : BORROWED money from private equity to build fabs, calls it SMART CAPITAL.
  11. Q1 : Losing money. Losing market share. Finally realizes sh-t is hitting the fan.
  12. Q2 : Disastrous earnings. Forced to layoff 20k. Cuts all benefits. Sells most offices. Sells all non-essential businesses.
  13. Q3 : Gives generous packages to departing employees costing the company BILLIONS.
  14. Q4 : Claims 5N4Y is "DONE".
  15. December 2024 : FIRED.
  16. Goes on Twitter to claim 18A is doing great, refuting media reports.
  17. Asks everyone to "pray for Intel" and fast every Thursday.

You forgot about the savings lost from insulting TSMC.

Pat's biggest problem was arrogance. He's smart; he's a good engineer; he's charismatic. He just said a lot of stupid things that should only be said around the water cooler - if even then.

The AI problem is more a software problem today. People are buying nVidia parts primarily b/c of the SW stack. The HW is good, do not get me wrong. But good hardware requires good software.

Hybrid work can indeed work, with the proper support: quarterly meetups, proper meeting culture (intel is broken there), improved hiring mindset. The first thing to cut was travel - not other things. That ki-ls the team building, comradery, etc.

In general, Intel hires folks to fit its tiny box of what some bureaucrat thinks needs to be "funded." "We need someone to do task X. Let's open a req for Task X Engineer." No one GOOD wants to be that siloed. So, only the mediocre apply. Hire good engineers who are flexible and can do more than one thing.

No viable AI product.
Just utter incompetence.

Good list! One more:
2024: Says NVIDIA was simply "lucky" and claims NVIDIA is successful only because he was fired in 2009 and Larrabee was cancelled.

2021: Says Hybrid work is the future. Work from anywhere. Destroyed any team spirit and culture.
