Thread regarding Citigroup Inc. / Citibank / Citi layoffs

If you don’t like your world, then change your world.

The worst thing you could do is nothing. If you don’t like your group, then go to another group. If you can’t change your group, then skill up and become invaluable to your current group and manager. It gives you a better footing and you’ll find you’ll have a larger say into what goes on whether you’re a manager or not. If you still don’t like your group or manager, It also gives you a better bargaining chip to go elsewhere outside of Citi.

Let’s face it, there are some very small micro managers out there. Some only know how to rule out of fear and actually enjoy barking at their employees. You can turn the table by skilling up and proving to them that YOU are more valuable than THEY are. Of course doing so, you now become a threat and a then later a target. You have to realize that and may end up leaving anyway.

If you in an unfortunate situation and can’t move or can’t leave, sometime all you can do is nothing but endure. This is the worst position to be in and is very sad. I heard a manager say one time that this is what they work toward to have their people put into a position to where they can’t leave or move groups. This way you can bark out anything and watch them all scurry around out of fear to get things done. To me this is a very sad individual in a position of power and its very hard to work for such a person but they do exist in Citi. Just keep skilling up if you can, if its possible and try to leave. I realize its very hard to do if they already demand long hours per day and you have a house full of kids to tend to but try. Whatever you do, don’t go to HR and complain. Every person I know who has done that, “somehow”, no one knows how, it leaked out, nothing happened, the manager complained against remained and the complainer became a target.

Another bit of advice but it works only if you are not a banker, sorry. If you are a number cruncher, or in tech or something like the office manager etc… look for jobs outside of the banking sector. Again, a banker is stuck with seeking employment in the banking sector but an accountant can be an accountant in some other sector. The same goes for a tech person. You can be a tech person somewhere else other than in the banking world.
As you job seek, widen your net of search.

Taken from another post:

Agreed. While its not a fast thing to do, financial security, well there’s nothing like it.
Pay down your credit cards, get them under control. Save every bonus and raise difference aside into your savings account. Build up your savings to have a year’s worth of salary in savings on the side that you NEVER touch. Its strictly layoff money.

This is something that’s done over the span of many years but I have admit, there’s nothing like the feeling of financial security like that should a layoff ever happen.

Also, skill up like a madman so that you are marketable.
Update your resume and any online profiles like LinkedIn.
Last but not least, network outside of Citi like a mother.

Good luck everybody.

I consider myself very fortunate. I don’t live beyond my means. I like my group and my role. Could things be better at Citi, sure they could. Have bad decisions or indecisions lead to this precipice we are at now, sure, yeah. I mean its not a low level player that got us here. Are they doing the right things to get us out of this mess? I have no idea. I have no idea what it takes to run a multi billion $bank and I certainly don’t know what it takes to fix it. I also know that no matter how good you’ve got it, things can change in a matter of seconds and its all gone. Either way, sometime all you can do is weather the storm.

Good advice! I stayed in the same group for 10+ years with some good managers along the way but the last couple came in and saw me as a threat so I endured but finally I up/skilled and got out.
