Thread regarding Meta / Facebook layoffs

Long story short

“Meta is working on building some of the most important technologies in the world — AI, glasses as the next computing platform, and the future of social media.” - we are clueless and shooting in the dark to try anything that sticks

“This is going to be an intense year, and I want to make sure we have the best people on our teams.” - no DEI

“I've decided to raise the bar on performance management and move out low-performers faster.” - like on a luggage carousel? Zuck finally admitting he’s just a low-level employee.

“We typically manage out people who aren't meeting expectations over the course of a year, but now we're going to do more extensive performance-based cuts during this cycle — with the intention of backfilling these roles in 2025.” - we’ll fudge the books so we don’t have to pay bonuses and up the stock price, then we bring back everyone as contractors

“We won't manage out everyone who didn't meet expectations for the last period if we're optimistic about their future performance, and for those we do let go we'll provide generous severance in line with what we've provided with previous cuts.” - we won’t fire everyone and we will fire most people

“We'll follow up with more guidance for managers ahead of calibrations. People who are impacted will be notified on February 10 — or later for those outside the US.” - HR is on vacay. They’ll get to it when they’re back.

“Letting people go is never easy.” -pssst.. it’s always easy..

“But I'm confident this will strengthen our teams and help us build leading technology to enable the future of human connection.” - I.e. something iZuck aspire to be - HUMAN.

if you take TikTok in consideration and today’s announcement from Facebook, we are probably looking at about 20,000 technology jobs lost and all that talent hitting the job market

This isn’t anything new—FB has always cut the bottom 5%. But, the fact that they made a public announcement signals to Wall Street that they’re gearing up for massive capex in 25, wqtch it exceeding $60 billion. Overall, this is great news for nvidia

If Meta truly wants to address this, they must overhaul their hiring process. Currently, it’s overly focused on MBA-style interviews, creating a hiring approach that feels more like an echo chamber than a serious effort to foster diverse talent and perspectives.
