You can hang out for a long time.
You just need to take a page out of my Indian friend's playbook.

JOB HOP.
Every 1 to 2 years get another position.
Embellish the h-ll out of what you did on your last project on your resume
and Move On!
Move from one friend's project to another friend's project to another friend's project...

I haven’t been at intel since 2019, but I don’t remember any real retirement benefits. Their thing was put enough away to pay for healthcare until you reach Medicare age. Wait or not wait does it really change anything you get from intel ?

It matters a lot when you retire vs when you get pushed into forced retirement. From sequence of returns risk to high inflation and interest rates that affect pensions and housing also take a bite in the long run....reverse of compounding.

Why does one wait for retirement? What's the advantage of waiting for Intel to retire an employee?

I am. I was 2 years away from ERP eligibility and didn't like what I was seeing in the job market to take VSP. I'm nine years from retirement and 6 years from paying off the house. I wasn't willing to take a guaranteed pay cut or have to move when I'm in my career home stretch. I still enjoy my job and am going to continue to give it my best.

OP, I’m one of those employees, I’m going to go to work and do my job until I retire, My goal was 45 years with Intel and that’s four years away, I was not ready to retire when the ERP was offered, whether I can make that we will see. Some people might roast me and say that I’m an id--t for not taking the ERP or say that I’m the cause of Intel’s downfall because I’m the “old guard” but I really don’t give a sh-t what they think and I will retire when I’m ready.
