1% raises don't go very far.

Look at your job grade, especially IT and what your pay is at Dell and then google what your title is and salary range is and be prepared for a big shock at how underpaid you are

"Dell doesn't pay competitive salaries at all. "

This. It doesn't take much research to find this out.
Anyone defending their salary at dell is in denial or obtuse. Or both.

You need to look at total compensation as someone here pointed out. From salary, rsus, bonus, refreshers, etc. Also employee perks and amenities --- which dell literally has none. Also look at ROI working at dell. It's very low. Working elsewhere as a MS will actually carry some brand-name weight.

And it's not just bad dell is subpar, dell is actually going to great lengths to shave even more pennies from employees.

Right now the strategy is latest is hiring leftover college grads on the cheap.

Dell doesn't pay competitive salaries at all. The longer you are at Dell the worse you are getting paid versus your peers in the same job and industry. Just look at the salary ranges on job postings. You will be applying like crazy when you see what other companies are offering.

My base pay is about the same as a friend working a similar role at MS in Seattle and some friends at other companies in Austin.

That said - where Dell falls on its face all is when you look total comp - RSU grants, ESPP, bonuses are quite a bit higher elsewhere. I’ve been lucky with stock grants compared to my peers at Dell and I still don’t get 1/4 of what MS, Google, etc pay out in RSUs.

Used to be worth the trade off, but now not so much.

Umm no, your manager is bluffing. Companies like Dell, HP, HPE don’t pay well at all unless you practically demand it. Work for one of your suppliers, you’d be surprised at the difference in pay and commission.

OEM companies like yours are extremely loyal to their investors so their cash flow prioritizes them over you.

I have a philosophy is always, “Companies can almost always afford whatever salary number you throw at them. But do I really deserve it? Did I do enough to earn it? Can I be trusted with a higher salary?” Sometimes those answers might be no. Sometimes companies will not match your expectations even if those answers are yes. The latter case, you should leave the company.

Having worked for an OEM company before, I can tell you that’s unlikely that they can meet your expectations. Unless you’re absolute top performing asset where your business unit would fall on its face if you left, they won’t try to retain you if you threaten to quit,

Dell pays low. Not catastrophically, but it’s not competitive.
