Thread regarding Cargill layoffs

Cargill is no longer a great company

Seriously consider moving on.

In the meantime, glutinously utilize every perk possible! Order the most expensive steak and wine on the menu at Mastro’s. And take an extra filet home for your dog. Sneak an upgrade to business class. And expense it as a medical necessity. Play golf. Expense it. Delta Sky Club- get creative and expense it! Order Starbucks and donuts for everyone at the office. Expense it. And submit the mileage to/from Starbucks as well. Leadership and the family heirs DO NOT care about you. Trust me!

I worked for Cargill and experienced solid career development when it was truly a great organization. However departed years ago- all for the better. Ernie, Warren and Page were solid leaders- from there things started downhill. IMO, Dmac was more of a social justice warrior than a talented CEO.

IMO, the beginning of the end is when hatchet man Marcel Smits entered. Day 1 he slashed/eliminated the pension. True, the decision saved $$$. But at what cost? It was a wonderful incentive to retain good employees; and obviously had a “hockey stick” effect toward the final years of employment. Which provided the employee a very nice cushion into retirement as a reward for years of dedication. Without pension- there is zero reason to show up to that penitentiary on McGinty Road- for a 2% raise (if you’re lucky) and little to no bonus. The other postings about Cargill manipulating employees out of a bonus are 110% true. EVERY EVERY EVERY year it’s just another freshly-minted alibi.

It amazed me the sense of pride, bordering on arrogance many at Cargill had. Textbook definition of SHEEPLE. Once outside the walls of the ivory tower, nobody cares. Customers don’t. General Mills is a few miles down the road and purchases as much or more syrup, starch, oil, chocolate from competitors. In fact, if you ask a customer- typical response- Cargill is difficult to do business with (Cargill’s way or the highway) and are usually the most expensive. Folks, pride doesn’t allow an exorbitant margin on $4 corn!!!

It’s a fine place to start a career- but please pack your bags after 3-5years or advancing a couple titles/job paybands. Having Cargill on your resume is a big plus. However, you’ll be astounded at how much you can earn- life after Cargill.

Moreover, it is going to be a difficult time for Big Ag moving forward. Simply too many headwinds in the foreseeable future.

Well said. Unfortunately, a lot of people drank the kool-aid about "putting people first" and believed the propaganda about Cargill being family-owned meaning that they treat people better than public companies. You were all swindled into accepting lower pay for perceived job security.
